🔥 Fire Safety Alert for Business Owners & Landlords 🔥

Did you know? In the year ending March 2024, there were 38,886 building fires in England, accounting for 6.5% of all incidents attended by Fire and Rescue Services (ref: gov.uk)

Sleeping premises, such as residential flats above commercial establishments, have significantly higher rates of fire per 1,000 known premises than non-sleeping premises (ref: gov.uk)

Fires in mixed-use buildings, like takeaways with flats above, pose significant risks to both commercial and residential occupants.

Key Fire Safety Considerations:

🔥 Compartmentation: Ensure robust fire separation between commercial and residential areas to prevent fire spread.

🔥 Escape Routes: Maintain clear, unobstructed escape routes for all occupants.

🔥 Fire Detection Systems: Install and regularly test interconnected fire alarm systems that alert both premises.

As part of our 2025/2026 Risk-Based Inspection Programme, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service is prioritising inspections of mixed-use premises including takeaways and shops with sleeping above.

Recognise it, Report it!

Research conducted in 2023 by the British Woodworking Federation as part of their Fire Door Safety Week campaign ‘Recognise it, Report it’, found that over half (57%) of the UK public couldn’t spot a problem with a fire door, leading to a failure to report issues.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults found that while awareness over factors that might prevent a fire door performing properly in the event of a fire is high, the majority of people couldn’t identify a faulty fire door.

Would you know how to spot a faulty fire door and who to report it to?
