๐Ÿš’ Every child deserves a safe place to learn, play, and grow.

As part of Child Safety Week, we're encouraging parents, carers, and guardians to take a few moments to discuss fire safety with their children.

๐Ÿ”ฅKey fire safety tips:

โœ… Tell someone straight away, a grown up if possible

โœ… Never play with matches and lighters

โœ… Plan and practise a home escape route.

โœ… Teach children what to do if they discover a fire.

โœ… Know how to call 999 in an emergency.

โœ… Never go back inside for anything

โœ… Get outside as quickly as possible. Don't try to hide from the fire

By working together, we can help prevent accidents and keep children safe.

๐Ÿšจ Remember. Check you smoke alarms!

Here at Eastern we are becoming very concerned of a trend we are seeing significantly more often.

This is the lack of seatbelts being worn by drivers and their passengers in and around parts of Leicester.

Last night while at an incident one of our crew had to strongly advise a driver of their legal responsibilities to secure their children in the correct seats and to have a seatbelt on.

This simple device can and will save your life and stop you being injured further in an impact with another vehicle.

If you are carrying children, you must ensure you have them in the correct type of seat.

๐Ÿš’This week is mental health awareness week.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’The job that our firefighters and control room staff can be at times not be a very nice job.

๐Ÿ”ฅOur crews will experience sights and sounds of traumatic incidents; each person will deal with each experience differently and can take its toll on the individual and their families over their career.

๐Ÿ“ฑWe have a number of support systems in place from the support of the crew/watch to our dedicated support systems in the service.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’The Firefighters charity are also there to support current and retired members but also our families who often are the unsung supporters of our crew members when away from work

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธWe also have a walk and talk group in Leicestershire open to anyone who has been part of fire service in operational roles or support roles. If you would like to attend please send the page a message and we will get the organisers to get in touch with you

๐Ÿš’Last night both appliances from Blue watch Eastern attended a house fire which had started in a bedroom.

๐Ÿ”ฅOn arrival crews were faced with a developing fire within the property, with the potential for fire spread to neighbouring homes.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’Initially 2 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus under rapid deployment quickly located and extinguished the fire, preventing further fire spread and limiting damage to surrounding properties. Crews worked quickly and efficiently to bring the incident under control.

๐Ÿš’Crews were later supported by the Turntable Ladder from Central Station along with additional assistance from Birstall crews.

๐Ÿš’Once the incident was made safe, crews remained on scene carrying out further checks and ventilation before ensuring occupants had the appropriate help with short term accommodation.

๐ŸšจRemember. Check your smoke alarms!

๐Ÿš’This Morning one of our appliances from Eastern was covering at Southern Station.

๐Ÿš’232 was mobilised to building fire next to a Thatched Property in Cosby.

๐Ÿ”ฅOn arrival crews found fire spreading along the roof and external part of the building towards the thatched building which is over 600 years old and currently home of tithe barn

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’ Initally 2 firefighters using breathing apperatus with Hose Reels under rapid deployment attacked the fire and stopped fire spreading further. Crews were initially assisted by one our off-duty firefighters and building owner.

๐Ÿ”ฅOn arrival of further resources 4 firefighters in breathing apparatus fully extinguished the fire and began to cut away damaged areas of the building.

๐Ÿš’On leaving the scene crews handed control of the building back to the building owner with crews returning later today to re inspect the damaged roof area of the property.

๐ŸŸขIt was an eventful end of shift for green watch yesterday.

๐Ÿ‘We must say well done and thank you to all the residents who worked together at the incidents before our arrival.

๐ŸšจTwo incidents of note for Eastern over the last week:

๐Ÿš’On Saturday we attended a flat fire caused by unattended cooking. This came into Fire Control as an alarm sounding.

๐Ÿ”ฅUpon arrival, smoke was found to be issuing from the kitchen window. Crews rescued 1 female casualty from the hallway of the property.

๐Ÿš’The fire was quickly dealt with and the property cleared, removing the smoke using our positive pressure ventilation fan.

๐ŸณDo not leave cooking unattended > Don't cook after taking medication that can lead to drowsiness.

๐Ÿ”ฅMake sure combustibles are not too close to the cooker top - leave a good distance for safety.

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ

๐ŸขThe second incident was a flat fire in student accommodation. The occupier of the flat returned to find their room full of thick, black smoke.

๐Ÿ“ฑThey did not panic, but closed the door and evacuated the property immediately, calling the fire service.
๐Ÿ”ฅ The fire was extinguished using 2 breathing apparatus wearers with a high pressure hose reel.

๐Ÿ”‹Upon investigation, the cause was found to be a faulty power back left on charge.

๐ŸšชClosing the door slowed fire growth and stopped smoke spreading throughout the property.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’Crews used a smoke curtain to further contain the smoke and limited limit damage upon entering the fire compartment.

๐ŸšซDon't leave batteries on charge when you go out.

โšก๏ธ Allow them to cool prior to charging.

๐Ÿšซdon't charge batteries, including electric bikes/scooters in exit routes such as hallways etc.

๐Ÿš’ Top tip - smoke alarms will alert you to a fire in its early stages and allow time for evacuation - provided they're working.
Check them. Plan an escape route for everyone in the property.
Close doors at night. Keep safe!

This week Red Watch Eastern and Birstall undertook some joint training at watermead park to test a water stratagy for local risks.

Crews set up a open circuit water relay getting water from the lakes to the nearby industrial units and also to our aerial ladder platform.

This is also a good practice should we need to do this with summer approaching where we often have to undertake water relay at incidents in more rural areas of the county.
