Our healthy living toolkits for people with a learning disability provide loads of helpful advice and details of support on better nutrition, hydration and physical activity.

Research shows that people with learning disabilities are significantly more likely to experience health conditions linked to poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity. In Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, more than one-in-ten (11%) of people with a learning disability are underweight, while one-in-three (33%) are living with obesity.

The Healthy Living Toolkits provide clear, accessible guidance tailored to three key audiences:
• Health professionals – with role-specific advice on identifying and monitoring concerns.
• Family and friend carers – offering practical tips and nutritional information.
• Individuals with lived experience – empowering people to take an active role in their own health.

The full set of toolkits are available for free download and there are specific versions for:
• People with lived experience: standard and easy read versions
• Family/friend carers
• Adult social care
• Carer providers
• GP practice staff
• Other healthcare professionals

A new set of healthy living toolkits have been launched today, 19 June 2025, to help support people with learning disabilities to lead healthier and happier lives. Learning Disability Week: Seeing beyond barriers

As part of Learning Disability Awareness Week (15–21 June), this third story shows how personalised, compassionate care can make a real difference.

What we did ✅
For our third story, we look at how our team took a persistent, person-centred approach—building trust through home visits, completing a health check, and supporting him with their urgent care needs.

This included GP support, a direct hospital admission (avoiding A&E), and tailored adjustments for a calm environment.

The outcome 💬
✔️ Engaged with healthcare services
✔️ Accessed urgent treatment
✔️ Remained settled throughout

Why this matters ❤️
By seeing his barriers and responding with flexibility and support, we helped him access the urgent care he needed.

Learning Disability Week: Seeing potential, not barriers

Here’s the second story for Learning Disability Awareness Week (15–21 June), highlighting how personalised, compassionate care can make a real difference.

Our team supported a man with a learning disability who had stopped coming to healthcare appointments and had never experienced a blood test, working gently and patiently to build trust and confidence.

How we saw him 👀
We recognised his anxiety, need for trust, and strong interest in superheroes.

What we did ✅
Built rapport through his interests and used a gradual, step-by-step approach to introduce health checks and the blood test.

During the appointment 💬
With clear communication, reassurance, and distraction techniques, he stayed calm.
✅ Blood sample taken for the first time

The outcome 🎉
✔️ First blood test completed
✔️ Felt proud and celebrated
✔️ More willing to engage with healthcare

Why this matters ❤️
By seeing what mattered to him, we turned a fearful experience into a positive one

Learning Disability Week: Seeing the person

This is the first of five powerful stories from our teams, showing how personalised, compassionate care can make a real difference.

We supported a woman in her 60s with a learning disability who was anxious about bowel screening and found it difficult to understand the process.

How we saw her 👀
We recognised barriers including anxiety, cultural sensitivities, living alone, and difficulty understanding written information.

What we did ✅
Provided a home visit, clear step-by-step support, female-to-female care, and practical help—including posting the sample.

The outcome 💬
✔️ Screening completed (negative result)
✔️ Confidence improved
✔️ Wider health needs identified

Why this matters ❤️
By truly seeing her needs and adapting our approach, we helped her access screening she may otherwise have missed.

It’s Learning Disability Awareness Week!

This week (15–21 June) is Learning Disability Awareness Week and this year’s theme “Do you see me?” is about truly seeing people with a learning disability — not just their needs, but who they are.

It’s a chance to promote inclusion, overcome barriers, and make sure everyone can access the care they deserve.

Throughout the week we’ll be looking at our teams’ powerful stories showing how personalised, compassionate care makes a real difference.

Because when we see people properly, we can support them better. 💙

Caring for someone is incredibly important, and so is making sure you get the support you need.

This Carers Week, we’re sharing some helpful steps to support your caring role:

✅ Register as a carer with the GP of the person you care for (and your GP if different) - it can be easier if you're registered with the same GP

✅ Ask your Local Authority (council) for a carers assessment

✅ Explore care and support needs assessments for the person you care for from your local council

✅ Check what benefits you may be entitled to, you can do this by visiting www.carersuk.org

✅ Get a Carers Passport

✅ If you work, speak to your employer about balancing work and caring

✅ Connect with local carers groups for support and community, you can find these on www.LLRjoy.com

✅ Look after your own mental health and wellbeing

✅ Reach out to local services if you need a break

You are not alone—support is available. Taking these steps can help you feel informed, supported and connected.

More information on these tips can be found in our Carers Pack, developed with carers: https://lptnhs.com/4x8jw0W
