The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched! 🚀🌌

Roman has begun its 100-day journey to its orbit around L2, a position in space around 1.5 million km away from the Earth. The telescope sees using infrared light, which is also given off by the Sun, Moon and Earth. By flying far away from the Earth, the telescope will keep these IR sources out of the way, so it can study the heat emitted by much more distant objects.

To keep the telescope on course, it has completed the first of its two planned correction burns. The second, if needed, is planned for later this week. 🔥

Within the upcoming weeks, we will see the telescope start to deploy its main instruments. This includes the Roman Coronagraph, which will block out the light of brighter objects, like stars, to spot distant worlds outside our Solar System. The Roman telescope aims to discover 100,000 new exoplanets (much more than the 6,000 we’ve currently found!) 🔭🪐

The Roman telescope’s Wide Field Instrument will rapidly image large patches of the night sky. Within its first five years, it will capture 50 times more of the sky than Hubble covered in its first 30 years! The telescope will help to uncover some of the biggest space mysteries, like black holes and dark matter. ✨
