Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming our LEAF partners to One Roof Leicester, where we shared some insight into our work, the people we support and the LEAF project, before showing them around our office and accommodation space. We then invited our partners to reflect on one simple question: β€œWhat does home mean to you?” Using reclaimed and waste materials, each partner created a piece of a collaborative collage. The responses were thoughtful and emotional reminding us that home can mean many things: culture, safety, memories, belonging and, most importantly, the people around us.
It was a lovely opportunity to have the LEAF partners together, share our experiences, learn from one another and reflect on the work we are collectively doing across our communities.

These sessions are part of the LEAF programme, made possible by our partnership with and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund πŸ€

A MASSIVE congratulations to our lovely volunteer Cliff, who has been selected as a finalist for the Kathryn Burgess Volunteer of the Year award at the VAL Awards 2026! Cliff is one of our longest standing volunteers and has always gone above and beyond for us, helping out with anything from gardening to admin to property management. Here at ORL, we all know first-hand how deserving he is of this award and we are so proud. He truly is a very special part of our team, thank you so much Cliff for all that you do! πŸ†πŸ’œ

Help us change lives by running for One Roof Leicester!

Run Leicester will be taking place this year on Sunday, 11th October. Last year, four runners (including Salma!) took part and raised over Β£2000 for ORL - money which helped us to continue delivering our services and supporting our residents. We are hoping to put together a team to take part this year too πŸƒ
If you would like to take part in Run Leicester on our behalf, please contact us at [email protected] - we will be covering the registration costs for all of our runners and can provide the details of the registration process including a registration code.
We are happy to support you in any way that we can: helping to set up fundraising pages, providing logistical info, answering any questions you may have etc., just get in touch! As places are limited, please let us know by September 1st if you'd like to take part.

Thank you so much to the Sustainability Team at Loughborough University for letting us come in and pick through the items left behind by students πŸ“¦ So many of the items left behind are unused or still in great condition, so it's amazing that the uni have found a way to give them a second life. This is the third year in a row that they have invited us to this event, and we leave with a fantastic haul every time! πŸ›’

As part of our Climate Action Programme, residents took part in an introductory sewing and clothing repair workshop, learning practical skills that help extend the lives of everyday clothing. πŸͺ‘
During the session, residents learnt three essential hand-stitching techniques: running stitch, blanket stitch and back stitch. They also practised sewing buttons back onto garments and learnt simple repair techniques that can be used to fix small tears.
These everyday skills not only save money but also help reduce clothing waste by encouraging us to repair, maintain and reuse items instead of replacing them.
This session marks the beginning of our sewing programme, where residents will continue building confidence by mending, upcycling and participating in creative textile projects. Through this programme, we hope they will develop skills that they can carry with them long after leaving One Roof Leicester.
These sessions are part of the LEAF programme, made possible by our partnership with Dmusdghub and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund's Climate Action Fund πŸ€

This week our residents got hands-on in the kitchen learning how to make affordable, healthy and sustainable meals using basic equipment and simple techniques.
On the menu: Baba Ganoush with flatbread, couscous with vegetables and chickpeas, and a fresh fruit yoghurt bowl. The meals were plant-based, protein-rich and prove that eating well doesn't have to cost the earth.
Residents learnt about meal prepping, batch cooking and how to use leftovers creatively - skills that reduce food waste and stretch your budget further. Because the food we throw away doesn't just cost money, it costs our planet.
Small changes in the kitchen can have a big impact on both our wallets and the planet.
