Kenneth’s Story | World Cancer Day
Kenneth was first diagnosed with sarcoma in 1998, at a time when he was expecting his first child. Doctors told him he would likely lose his leg — a thought that terrified him more than the idea of death itself. He went into surgery not knowing what he would wake up to, and against the odds, Kenny woke with both legs. The team had successfully removed the cancer while saving his leg.
He was also told he wouldn’t be able to have any more children. Kenneth went on to prove that wrong too, welcoming two more children into his life.
At the time, Kenneth was warned the cancer would likely return within five years. Instead, he lived cancer-free for 26 years.
Last year, Kenneth began experiencing pain in his leg. Initial tests came back normal and it was thought to be sciatica. As the pain worsened, he noticed a lump behind his knee, followed by another in his armpit. He was referred on a two-week wait pathway, but escalating pain and swelling led him to attend A&E. A biopsy confirmed that the cancer had returned.
After meeting with Dr Speed, Kenneth was told how serious his diagnosis was, and that treatment would focus on maintaining quality of life. Kenneth’s response was immediate and resolute:
“I won’t give up. Throw everything at me. I’m determined. I will live as long as I can.”
Following two rounds of intensive chemotherapy — requiring week-long hospital stays — Kenneth began to notice changes. He could now lie on his side due to reduced pain, scans showed reduced activity and a decrease in tumour size. He went on to complete four further rounds of treatment, with results Kenneth describes as “a miracle”.
Kenneth’s message to others facing cancer is simple but powerful:
“Focus on recovery. Your mind is strong. It doesn’t matter what you’re told — doctors look at figures, but you have one chance. Fight.”
Kenneth cannot thank Dr Speed or his Macmillan Cancer Nurses, Antia, Sally, and Sam, enough. They have never given up on him and have made his journey so much easier through their care, support, and unwavering belief in him.
On World Cancer Day, Kenneth’s story reminds us of the power of determination, hope, and the life-changing impact of compassionate care.
