For all Fire Cadet enquiries, please email - [email protected] Each unit operates at a fire station for two hours, one evening per week.

Fire Cadets is a nationally recognised educational programme for young people aged 13-18. Fire Cadets provides young people with various skills throughout the programme, including team work, problem solving and communication. The programme is designed to enhance key citizenship skills through a variety of structured Fire and Rescue Service led activities. Young people may also have a chance to work towards a nationally recognised qualification.

🔥 Meet More of Our Team! 🔥

We’re back with two more people from our fantastic Fire Cadets team! This time, meet Andrea, one of our Cadet Leaders, and Josh O, one of our Cadet Volunteers.

🚒 Josh O – Cadet Volunteer

Favourite food:
Cheeseburger, chicken wrap, or pizza with pineapple!!!! 🍔🌯🍍🍕

Favourite drill:
Hose running – it shows the teamwork and skills of the Fire Cadets. 💦

Reason for doing cadets:
To gain experience and knowledge about being a firefighter, with the aim of applying to become a firefighter in the future. 🚒

Funniest cadet memory:
Doing the BA shuffle in the dark when one of the cadets somehow ended up in a cupboard! 😂

Interesting fact about you:
I'm a starting Cornerback for an American Football team – wow Josh! 🏈😮

🚒 Andrea – Cadet Leader & LFRS Employee

Favourite food:
Italian food – I love garlic bread and tiramisu… though not together! 🇮🇹😋

Favourite drill:
BA (Breathing Apparatus) – watching cadets trample over random things in the smokehouse is always entertaining! 😂

Reason for doing cadets:
I was retired and saw the role advertised, so I thought I’d give it a go!

Funniest cadet memory:
When one of our Cadet Crew Managers was asked where the safest place on the drill yard was, he replied: “Behind you, Andrea!” 😂

Interesting fact about you:
I’m a twin! 👯‍♀️ We can't believe there are two people as unique as you Andrea!!

🎓 GCSE Results Day 2026! 🎓

This week we’re thinking of all our Fire Cadets, and all the other young people who have been collecting their GCSE results. 📚✨

We hope you got the results you wanted and needed, and that you’re feeling proud of everything you’ve achieved. 🙌

For those heading off to college, sixth form, an apprenticeship or onto the next stage of your journey — good luck! 🚒🔥 We can’t wait to hear all about your plans and what the future holds.

And remember, if things haven’t gone exactly as you hoped, there are still plenty of options and different routes forward. 💙

Our Cadets are enjoying their summer holiday and following NFCC advice to stay safe in this extreme weather.

Wildfires Public Safety Advice:

• Avoid using disposable barbecues in open countryside, parks, and moorland areas.
• Do not discard ci******es, matches, or glass bottles, as they can ignite dry vegetation.
• Follow local authority guidance on fire risks and restrictions.
• If you notice any suspicious behaviour or see someone intentionally starting a fire, contact the Police immediately or report the information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
• If there is a fire, call 999 immediately.
• Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999 and asking for the Fire and Rescue Service.

Water Safety Public Safety Advice:

Take care when near water – in 2023 37% of people who drowned were running or walking and had no intention of entering the water
• Do not jump into water to cool off
• Ensure you actively supervise children in and near water
• Do not enter the water if you have been drinking alcohol
• Make sure you know how to help yourself and other people in the event of a water-related emergency.

If you see someone else in trouble in the water this summer, remember Call, Tell, Throw:
• Call 999 to get help
• Tell the struggling person to float on their back
• Throw them something that floats

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, Float to Live by:

• Tilting your head back with ears submerged
• Relaxing – to try to control your breathing
• Moving your hands to help stay afloat
• Once over the initial shock, calling for help or swimming to safety

🔥 Meet the Team – This Month's Spotlight! 🔥

This month, we're getting to know Josh W and Emmadee. From favourite drills to funny memories and a few surprising facts, here's your chance to find out a little more about two of the people who help inspire our cadets every week. 👇

🚒 Josh W – Volunteer

Favourite food:
Jacket potato or a meat feast pizza… controversially with pineapple! 🍍🍕

Favourite drill:
BA (Breathing Apparatus) – I enjoy the more technical and challenging side of it.

Reason for doing cadets:
I love the Fire Service and have always felt welcome. I really enjoyed my time as a Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet… and Katherine made me come back as a volunteer! 😂

Funniest cadet memory:
Any moment that gets Leader Katherine screaming – whether that's on the turntable ladder or at PGL! Thanks very much, Josh! 🤣

Interesting fact about you:
As a Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet, I had the honour of showing Prince Edward around the Jewry Wall Museum. 👑

🚒 Emmadee – Fire Cadet Instructor

Favourite food:
Chicken pie and mash… yummy! 🥧😋

Favourite drill:
Water relay, working as a team to build improvised dams, and seeing how they work. 💦

Reason for doing cadets:
To inspire young minds and help young people develop new skills and confidence.

Funniest cadet memory:
During a BA (Breathing Apparatus) drill, one of the instructors acting as the casualty was accidentally knocked on the helmet and was left wondering what had happened! Thankfully, no one was hurt! 😄

Interesting fact about you:
I'm a keen photographer and much prefer capturing natural, real-life moments rather than posed photographs. 📸

On 19 July 2026, I celebrated 20 years with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

Looking back, I'm incredibly proud of everything I've been part of during that time. I've been fortunate to work alongside some amazing colleagues and have had opportunities that I never imagined when I first joined.

The last 10 years have been spent working with Fire Cadets, and without doubt, it has been one of the most rewarding roles of my career. Watching young people grow in confidence, develop new skills, challenge themselves, and leave with a much better understanding of who they are and what they want to do is a privilege.

I've also loved working with our fantastic volunteers, many of whom were once cadets themselves. Seeing them return to inspire and support the next generation is something I'm incredibly proud of.

I've always believed in leading by example. If I'm asking a cadet to step outside their comfort zone, then I should be willing to do the same. That has meant taking on some challenges that have genuinely terrified me—from Outward Bound swings that left me shaking, to climbing ladders and wearing breathing apparatus—but every experience has reminded me why it's so important to encourage others to have a go.

A huge thank you to all my colleagues, volunteers, cadets, friends and family who have supported me over the past 20 years. I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of such a fantastic organisation, and I'm excited to see what the future holds.

🎉 Congratulations to all of our Fire Cadets who have successfully completed Award 1 this term! 🎉

Our cadets were presented with their certificates by SM Joe Warren in recognition of their achievement and commitment.

Award 1 is the result of months of hard work, learning about the different functions of the Fire and Rescue Service, developing practical skills through drills and exercises, and contributing to their communities through a range of social action events and projects.

We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved. Their dedication, teamwork, and willingness to get involved have been outstanding throughout the programme.

Well done to all of our Award 1 graduates – a fantastic achievement and a well-deserved certificate. Keep up the great work! 🚒👏

Our Central and Western Fire Cadets celebrated the end of term with an evening of games in the park. Coalville enjoyed water fun at station! ☀️💦

As well as having fun, it was a great opportunity to reinforce some important summer safety messages. Throughout the evening, cadets practised staying safe in the sun by wearing appropriate clothing, applying sun cream, taking regular breaks in the shade, staying hydrated, and avoiding overexertion in the warm weather.

We also reminded everyone about the dangers of open water and the importance of keeping away from rivers, lakes and reservoirs unless at a supervised venue.

A fantastic way to round off another successful term. Well done to all our cadets and volunteers, and we hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer! 🌞🚒

One of our Cadets spent his work experience with Cadet Leader Katherine. Ryan supported all three Cadet sessions and helped organise kit and the end of term activities.

Thank you to Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control, Workshops and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Southern Station for showing us around and everyone we met out and about who warmly welcomed Ryan.

🔥 Meet More of Our Team! 🔥

Behind every cadet session is a team of dedicated volunteers and instructors who give up their time to support, encourage, and inspire young people. This week we're shining the spotlight on Steve and Harley, two team members who both started their journeys in very different ways but share the same passion for helping cadets succeed.

Let's get to know them a little better! 👇

🚒 Harley – Volunteer

Favourite food:
Fish and chips – will never turn it down! 🍟🐟

Favourite drill:
Ladders and working at height. It's great to see cadets grow in confidence and achieve things they didn't think they could do.

Reason for doing cadets:
I was a cadet myself and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to stay involved. I also have an aptitude for working with young people and helping them develop new skills.

Funniest cadet memory:
Realising the kitchen at Frankie & Benny's was actually on fire while the cadets were enjoying a meal together! The look on Andy's face (an ex-firefighter) was priceless. 😳🚒🔥

Interesting fact about you:
I'm an avid card game player, regularly competing in tournaments and often placing quite highly. 🃏🏆

Harley's another great example of a former cadet giving back and helping the next generation build confidence, skills, and lifelong memories. 🚒🔥

🚒 Steve – Instructor

Favourite food:
Pizza (pepperoni and pineapple... yes, really! 🍍🍕)

Favourite drill:
Any combination drill with lots of water 💦

Reason for doing cadets:
Apparently I have a flair for teaching (or so I've been told! 🤣), so I thought this would be a great way to get back into instructing. It also helps keep my basic skills sharp. As I'm in my forties, I forget things quite quickly! I also admire the cadets for getting involved in something constructive rather than being stuck in front of a screen.

Funniest cadet memory:
I'm still fairly new, so I don't have many stories yet, but spotting the occasional helmet on backwards has been quite amusing! 😄

Interesting fact about you:
I share my birthday with Prince William and the Summer Solstice ☀️🎂

A great addition to the team—and proof that even pineapple belongs on pizza... according to Steve! 🍕😂
