Experiencing Time’ by Betül, the 2026 winner of the Frank Kerslake Award! 🏆🎨

This beautiful charcoal portrait was selected by our external judges as the winning artwork in this year’s We Present: Leicester Adult Education exhibition 🖼️

The Frank Kerslake Award was created in memory of Frank Kerslake, a much-loved member of our learner community, and celebrates creativity, originality and artistic expression.

When Hoornaz moved to the UK in 2002, she found it difficult to communicate because of the language barrier.

📚 After joining a Family Learning English course, Hoornaz’s confidence grew and she progressed onto ESOL, improving her English speaking, reading and writing skills.

We have a winner in our Picture the Story Art Challenge! 🎉

A huge congratulations to Kirstien, the winner of our Picture the Story Art Challenge, held to celebrate the National Year of Reading 2026 🎨📚

Learners were invited to create a piece of artwork inspired by a favourite book or poem, interpreting its words, scenes, characters or emotions in any medium. Entries were judged on the overall impact of the artwork.

🗣️ "I was over the moon to find out I had actually won!"

Alongside her submission, Kirstien explained the inspiration behind her piece:

"Growing up, books were the one place where I felt completely safe. Real life was often loud, unstable, or lonely, but stories gave me a world where I belonged. Inside them, I had friends, adventures, and a sense of comfort I didn’t always have around me. My piece shows someone being drawn into a book, representing the feeling of finding home in a world made of words."

🖼️ Kirstien's winning artwork, along with a selection of other entries, are currently being displayed in ‘We Present: Leicester Adult Education’. The exhibition is open in our Balcony Gallery at Leicester Adult Education College until Friday 5 September, open during our usual summer building hours.
