When I am conducting a private tour at The Parc, I am often asked why insects lose a leg or have a ā€œshort lookingā€leg. Invertebrate legs are often quite fragile and might be lost to a predator, fighting or in a bad moult. If the loss happens early in its growing life the limb can often be regenerated over a series of moults, sometimes even growing back to full size !!! Where a limb is lost, prior to its next moult an invertebrate will create a small folded limb bud at the point it was lost, then in the moult it will push out the specially formed wing bud using liquid haemolymph to stretch it as much as it can. This ā€œnewā€ limb will be useable and will keep getting lengthened on each successive moult. In the two videos here, this mantis has grown a new ā€œsmallā€raptorial leg on its final moult to adult, unfortunately this one will grow no bigger than it is now as the mantis is adult and will not have further moults, but even this stubby leg will still help it to walk, balance and hold preyā€¦.. better than not having it.

Weā€™ve got some brilliant entertainment lined up for this October half term! Weā€™ll be joined by the amazing _johnnyjaffacake who will be bringing you fun and laughs throughout the day. Including spooky magic shows, bug bingo a ghostly bubble party and more! Whatā€™s more, Johnny will be with us for 5 whole days from 26th - 30th! We know this is going to be a hit so as in the summer, we advise booking early to avoid disappointment.

A very kind patron donated this amazing Sawfish rostrum to the zoo recently, and yes, I know itā€™s not an invertebrate or part thereof, but itā€™s just too amazing not to put on show. I have placed it in our shell museum with the appropriate Article 10 certificate required by law as the sawfish is a protected species. It is actually over 65 years old and was collected before the CITES regulations even came into force. See this amazing rostrum and over 230 different invertebrates species at The Bug Parc now.

Our horse head grasshoppers, bizarre looking things that they are, are busy laying eggs in the groundā€¦.. and donā€™t they look really weird with half their body pushed into the ground ??? The 3rd picture shows an adult female out of the ground and the headshots reveal how they got their name. These are long grasshoppers and are currently on show in our Orthoptera visitor display area. With a free return visit up to 22.10.26 now is the time to get two visits for the price of one. šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

Our onsite cafe has come up with a few new items now that the weather has changed.
Loaded Hash-browns which I can testify are superb.
Homemade pies which Iā€™m yet to try but I saw them being made and theyā€™re LOADED!
I also saw roast potatoes (which naturally I had to sample) meaning Loaded roasties are back too!

This scary looking creature is Psyttala horrida, It is commonly called the horrid king assassin bug or giant spiny assassin bug. It has a sharp rostrum at the front of its head with which it pierces its prey and then it proceeds to inject its strong toxic saliva into its prey turning its insides into an insect soup which it then sucks up leaving an empty shellā€¦ yummy šŸ¤¤ anyone for tea ???? You can see this beautiful animal on show now at The Bug Parc and at present we are offering a free return visit before the 22nd October for every paying visitor.

Itā€™s always nice to get a bit of recognition for the work you put into things! On our recent routine Environmental health visit our cafe was awarded 5 stars as was our gift shop! Thereā€™s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that not only do we serve great food, but we also comply with all of the hygiene and food management to meet the necessary requirements set by the council.
A massive well done to our team! (Harry and Debra were overjoyed as you can see!)
