Are you following Lerwick28 yet? Get behind the campaign to make Lerwick a Town of Culture and bring up to £3 million in funding here. Do make sure you fill in the survey before 9 October so that all that input can be highlighted in our bid.

Our great town is shortlisted and could be hosting, promoting and creating cultural events and projects in 2028. As part of the funding bid we are all invited to fill in an initial survey. The link is in this article.

Folk in Shetland are being encouraged to help shape Lerwick’s bid to be the UK’s first ever town of culture.

Lerwick is one of just 15 towns shortlisted from nearly 400 applicants, with the Lerwick 28 bid being launched today.

If successful, Lerwick would receive £3 million to deliver a major cultural programme in 2028, with six towns competing in the small town category.

And finally, congratulations to the Winner of our Lerwick Garden Competition 2026:
Katrina Paul – Bankfield, Seafield.
This is a new garden, created in just the last couple of years alongside a new house build, but already looks like a mature landscape dominated by wildflowers. The judges were particularly impressed by the forward planning of the site, and the care given to enhancing the wonderful views from the house, including creating a sunken seating area. Katrina has rebuilt a whole drystone daek and also used original flagstones from the old house to good effect. There was extensive use of recycled items to create interest and much thought given to making it a welcoming habitat for hedgehogs, birds and bees. The garden is stunning to look at and makes the best if the natural environment and location.
Katrina receives a trophy, cash prize and bee-friendly wildflower plants from Species on the Edge.

All Lerwick’s gardens and areas of community planting improve our environment for both wildlife and people, and it is always a real privilege to be invited in to see the love and care people put into their gardens.

Our Runner up and best wildlife garden prize went to Janice Leask, Longland, Sound
This mature garden seems to consider nature and wildlife in every corner and hosts resident hedgehogs and bird nests. There is a huge variety of bee friendly planting designed to bloom across a long season, including wilder areas. Careful planting around the mature sycamores using plants that enjoy shade enhances the variety. There are water dishes, bird baths and feeders and Janice makes her own nature friendly fertiliser and pest control products from nettles, rhubarb leaves and garlic. There are also substantial compost bins and vegetable gardening.

Janice received vouchers from sponsor Harbro Country Stores and a wildflower selection from Species on the Edge - red clover, bird's-foot trefoil and meadow vetchling. They are all species that provide nectar and pollen for native Shetland bumble bees. The seeds were collected in the wild and germinated at the Shetland Amenity Trust as part of the Species on the Edge project.

Congratulations also to Sound School for helping with this valuable tree planting.

Primary pupils played their part in expanding Lerwick’s urban woodlands by planting almost 300 trees through an annual conservation project.
