Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid 🪐

The book begins with a malfunction on a space shuttle, which astronaut and spacecraft communicator Joan Goodwin has to guide safely back to earth. The narrative then jumps back and forth in time, with the reader following Joan and her fellow astronauts from the beginning of the space shuttle program in 1980 and then being sent straight back to December 1984 on the disastrous mission STS-LR9.

I was truly unable to put this book down. The story grabbed me from the very first chapter and, though I finished the books months ago, hasn't quite let me go yet! The narrative was gripping, there wasn't a single character I felt I didn't quite know, and Joan and Vanessa's love story is deep, passionate and heart-wrenching in the best way.

As well as being a beautiful love story, Atmosphere is a novel about friendship, courage, finding your place in the universe, and the extraordinary lengths we go to live.

I fell in love with Taylor Jenkins Reid's storytelling with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and I knew it would take something really spectacular to knock it off its podium, but Atmosphere did that. Though maybe controversially, part of me wishes the ending had been different... 👀 No spoilers!

Old slippers often cause trips and falls, which can lead to unnecessary stays in hospital and loss of independence.

At our Slipper Swaps, residents who are older, have mobility difficulties or a disability can throw away their worn-out slippers and swap them for a brand-new free pair of anti-slip ones - and find out more about keeping themselves safe and well by talking to an occupational therapist or one of our many other community partners.

📚Staff recommendation

The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne

This is one of my all time favourite books - and I have read a lot!
The book follows the story of Cyril Avery, who was adopted as a baby. We follow him into adulthood and through his struggle to find his identity and a home. There is humour within the story but also some sad moments.
I found the book easy to read and totally absorbing. I didn't want it to end and it's one of those books that has stayed with me.
