Doggy Splash sessions relocated to Hitchin following Letchworth Lido closure 💦🐶

Dog owners still have the chance to take part in Doggy Splash this week, with additional sessions available at Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre following high demand.

The sessions, which give dogs the chance to enjoy an outdoor swimming pool alongside their owners, were originally due to take place at Letchworth Lido this weekend. However, following the closure of Letchworth Lido due to the impact of localised flooding, all Doggy Splash sessions have now been relocated to Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre.

Due to high demand, additional sessions are taking place on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 September, with spaces still available to book.

Customers who booked a Doggy Splash session at Letchworth Lido do not need to take any action. Their booking will automatically be transferred to Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre, with the same date and time as their original booking.

Don’t fan the flame! 🌡️ ☀️

This summer has seen a big increase in sales of fans and cooling devices to help us beat the heat.

If your handheld fan or other electric cooling device is broken and can’t be fixed, please do NOT put it in your household bin ❌

Battery powered and electrical devices can spark and start fires in the back of collection vehicles or at recycling facilities, putting our waste crews and communities at risk.
Instead, find your nearest electrical recycling point here: https://recycleyourelectricals.org.uk/

We're celebrating the importance of protecting the district’s chalk streams and wetlands as part of ongoing efforts to conserve some of the world’s rarest freshwater habitats.

There are only around 260 chalk streams worldwide, with approximately 85% found in England. Hertfordshire is home to around 10% of these globally rare habitats – making the county one of the most important areas for chalk stream conservation.

Within Hertfordshire these specialist habitats support species including kingfishers, dragonflies, otters, water voles, brown trout, and a wide variety of aquatic plants. North Herts has several chalk streams, including River Ivel, the River Oughton, the River Hiz, and River Purwell.

We work with Hertfordshire County Council’s Countryside Management Service (CMS), Affinity Water, volunteer groups and local conservation partners to monitor habitats, improve water environments and support wildlife.

Protecting chalk streams is becoming increasingly important as prolonged dry periods and pressure on water resources affect river flows and freshwater habitats across Hertfordshire. One example of how partners are responding to these challenges can be found at Ivel Springs Local Nature Reserve, where Affinity Water delivered the River Ivel Restoration Project during 2023 and 2024.

The scheme included river restoration works, the creation of an enhanced seasonal wetland and measures to support river flows during periods of low groundwater levels. The work helped restore natural chalk stream features and create new wetland habitats for wildlife.
