Lewes Priory Park

Lewes Priory Park Founded in the 11th century by monks from Cluny in France, the Priory of St Pancras survived until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537.

There is much to see at Priory Park. Walk in the footsteps of medieval monks and imagine how the buildings once looked with the aid of our interpretation panels. A herb garden grows plants that monks would have used for medicinal, culinary and ceremonial purposes. The South Downs frame the site; providing a spectacular setting. Open all year round, free entry.

🏛️ Step Inside Lewes Town Hall This Heritage Open Day! 🏛️

Join Lewes Town Council on Sunday 13 September for a special and discover the stories that make Lewes such a unique and fascinating town.

In partnership with the Cluniac Network, visitors can experience medieval life at Lewes Priory of St Pancras brought vividly to life in the Yarrow Room through sights, sounds and hands-on activities.

Explore the historic Council Chamber and Mayor's Parlour, where you can try on councillors' robes and hats and pose for your very own mayoral portrait! Friendly volunteers will be available throughout the day to answer questions about the Town Hall's rich history and its role in Lewes today.

☕ A café will also be open during the event.

We’re delighted to see that Landport Bottom, part of the historic landscape of the Battle of Lewes, has been chosen for the front cover of Managing Registered Battlefields, a new guide published by Natural England.

The guide has been jointly developed by Natural England, Historic England, the Forestry Commission and the Battlefields Trust, bringing together 30 years of experience in managing these nationally important sites since the first Registered Battlefields were designated in 1995.

Designed to support advisors, land managers and local communities, the publication highlights the importance of taking an integrated approach to caring for these sensitive historic landscapes. It is a supplement to Natural England’s Nature Recovery and the Historic Environment guidance.

Through a series of case studies and examples of best practice, the guide demonstrates how Registered Battlefields can deliver benefits for people, nature and heritage, while continuing to support food production and the rural economy.

It’s wonderful to see Landport Bottom recognised in this way, highlighting both its rich history and its importance as a valued local landscape.
