A manipulative abuser who choked a woman has been jailed.

Jamie Hall admitted coercive control on the woman who was known to him and left her in fear.

“I don’t want what happened to me to happen to any other woman,” she said.

Hall was sentenced to three years and two months in prison and was made the subject of a ten-year restraining order.

Speaking after the case, Detective Constable Beth Charles said: “We take reports of domestic abuse and violence extremely seriously, and
tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a top priority for Suss*x Police.

“After the victim came forward to report her experience, we were determined to get justice, and Hall is now serving a custodial sentence.”

Out and about this week 🧺🚓

Earlier this week, your Landport Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) attended the Landport Community Picnic at Landport Community Gardens.

Organised by residents and the Landport Residents' Association, the event was a great opportunity for PCSOs to attend and meet residents, put faces to names, discuss local concerns, and provide updates on reported incidents and crime prevention activity in the area.

It was also a great chance to engage with youngsters outside of term-time, with many enjoying the opportunity to try on police uniform, sit in a police vehicle, and experience what it is like to be a 'police officer for the day'.

Officers were also on hand to answer questions and discuss careers in policing.

ASB driving in Newhaven

Following reports from local residents around anti-social driving and nuisance bikes, officers from your Lewes Neighbourhood Policing Team have been carrying out additional proactive patrols in the last few weeks to address community concerns.

Already this week, officers have issued a number of Section 59 warnings to riders using motorcycles in an anti-social manner whilst out on patrol.

A Section 59 warning can be issued when a vehicle is used in a way that causes alarm, distress or annoyance to the public; if the driver is stopped again for ASB related matters within 12 months, their vehicle will be seized.

Further action was also taken during late-night patrols last night (26 August), when officers on patrol were alerted to a motorcycle being ridden dangerously, not only was the motorcycle carrying two people, but it also had no lights, no registration plates displayed, and neither rider was wearing a helmet.

Officers caught up with the motorcycle, and both riders made off on foot, following a foot chase, both individuals were located, and the motorcycle was seized.

We hope that these results demonstrate our continued commitment to tackling nuisance bikes and anti-social behaviour across the district, targeted patrols will continue in areas where concerns have been reported, and action will be taken where offences are identified.

Update: Three teenagers arrested following Newhaven assault

Three teenagers have been arrested following an incident in Newhaven High Street on Monday evening (24 August) around 8pm, during which it was reported a woman was assaulted and a dog was kicked.

A 16-year-old boy from Hassocks and a 17-year-old girl from Brighton were both arrested on suspicion of common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and theft from a shop. Both have been bailed while enquiries continue.

A 15-year-old girl from Brighton has also been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. She remains in custody at this time.

Lewes Neighbourhood Policing Inspector John Adams said: “We have taken swift action following this incident and three people have been arrested. Our enquiries are continuing as we work to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

“We understand the video circulating on social media may have been concerning for those who have seen it, and we would still ask anyone with information or relevant footage to contact us.”

Anyone with information or relevant footage is asked to contact police online or by calling 101, quoting serial 1438 of 24/08.

Police are aware of a video circulating on social media showing a woman being assaulted in Newhaven High Street at around 8pm yesterday (Monday, 24 August), during which a dog also appears to have been kicked.

Officers are taking action to establish the full circumstances of the incident and identify those involved.

Lewes Neighbourhood Policing Inspector John Adams said: “We are aware of a video circulating on social media showing an incident in Newhaven yesterday evening. Officers are taking action to establish the full circumstances and identify those involved.

“We understand the video may be concerning to those who have seen it, and we would ask anyone with information or relevant footage to contact us.”

Anyone with information, or who may have relevant footage, is asked to contact police online or by calling 101, quoting reference 47260200170.

We are reminding the public to be sure of who they are talking to, following a spike in reports of calls from ‘spoofed’ phone numbers.

Scammers use 'spoofing' to make calls and texts appear to come from legitimate organisations. They do this to gain your trust and persuade you to share personal information or transfer money.

We will never call out of the blue, asking for personal or bank details.

If a caller claims to be from the police, you can always hang up and ring us back to verify the call, by phoning 101 or 999 in an emergency.

A 21-year-old Newhaven man who committed s*x crimes against children has been jailed for more than 10 years.

When officers arrested Samuel Carragher they found multiple devices containing illegal images of children.

Detective Constable Ana Wellfare, from the Online Child Abuse Team, said: “Carragher’s actions were appalling and involved a large number of children. The impact his behaviour had on his young victims cannot be underestimated.

“Such crimes cause lasting harm and have no place in our society.”

Motorcycle theft

Motorcycle theft continues to be reported across the district and remains a topic of concern for many riders and residents, with thieves often targeting motorcycles, mopeds and scooters due to their portability and value.

We would like to reassure residents and owners that we are aware of this issue and the concerns it raises; we continue to share crime prevention advice through our online channels and through engagement with owners during patrols and local operations.

Local policing teams and officers have been made aware of this trend internally to help ensure officers remain alert to suspicious activity when on patrol or otherwise out in the community; and where arrests, charges or court outcomes are secured, we will continue to share these with the public.

To help support these efforts, we are also sharing some practical crime prevention advice for motorcycle owners to help minimise the chance of theft and reduce opportunities for offenders.

• Where possible, fit a tracking device and an approved alarm or immobiliser to help deter thieves and increase the chances of recovery if your bike is stolen.
• Keep your motorcycle out of sight when not in use and store it in a locked garage or shed if available, ensuring garages and sheds are properly secured with strong locks and security fixtures.
• Always use quality locks and chains, securing your bike to a fixed object or ground anchor wherever possible.
• Park in well-lit, busy locations and consider using multiple layers of security to make theft more difficult.
• Never leave keys in the ignition or the engine running unattended, even for a moment, it only takes seconds for a thief to steal a motorcycle.
• Consider property marking or a security registration scheme; marked bikes are less appealing to thieves as they are harder to sell on and easier for police to identify and recover.
