“A safe, stable home is about so much more than having a roof over your head. It can give someone security, independence and the space to rebuild their life.”

This Supported Housing Week (19–23 October), we’re joining the National Housing Federation to highlight the difference supported housing makes and why protecting its future matters.

Housing has been at the heart of Southdown’s work for more than 50 years. Today, we are a specialist landlord for around 450 tenants and shared owners across Sussex.

In our latest blog, Jim Aspdin, our Director of Housing and Assets, reflects on the experiences that shaped his understanding of what a home can mean:

“A home provides a foundation. It gives people somewhere to feel safe, establish routines, maintain relationships and make choices about their lives. Where someone also needs support, bringing housing and support together can help them overcome challenges, develop confidence, build independence and – just as importantly – establish relationships and build inter-dependence.”

Jim shares Southdown’s ambition to expand access to safe, affordable homes and why sustainable funding is essential to protect these vital services. He also explores how working with partners can help us find practical solutions to Sussex’s housing challenges.

A safe and stable home can make all the difference to someone’s wellbeing, confidence and independence.

Southdown is pleased to share that we have been awarded six contracts to deliver homelessness prevention services across all of West Sussex through Pathways Home. We’ll continue supporting people in Adur and Worthing, Crawley and Horsham, while taking over the existing service in Chichester and introducing new services in Arun and Mid Sussex.

Cllr Richard Bates, Cabinet Member for Adults Services at West Sussex County Council, said:
"We know how important a safe and stable home is to people’s health, wellbeing and independence. Through joined up support we can make it easier for people at risk of homelessness to get the right help at the right time."

“Pathways Home is about intervening early and providing practical, personalised support, so people don’t have to navigate complex systems alone or repeatedly tell their story."

Each person has a named Key Worker who listens to what matters to them and helps them take manageable steps forward. Support might include resolving benefits or rent arrears issues, working with landlords, or helping someone settle safely into a new home.

Neil Blanchard, our Chief Executive, said:
"We are proud to continue serving Adur and Worthing, Crawley, and Horsham, and look forward to bringing the same commitment and local focus to Chichester, Arun, and Mid Sussex. These awards enable us to build on trusted local services and extend practical, compassionate support to more people across West Sussex."

The services are co-funded by West Sussex County Council and district and borough housing partners, working together to help more people avoid homelessness and live independently.

“Southdown’s values align closely with my personal values, and that’s why I feel comfortable working here.”

This World Values Day, Dom Fry, our Manager of Learning and Development, shares a simple idea he’s introduced to recognise colleagues who bring our values to life.

At Southdown, our five values—Brilliant with People, Force for Good, Responsive, Trustworthy and United—guide how we work and support people. They show up in everyday actions: how we speak to each other, respond when things don’t go to plan and make someone feel when they need support.

Dom has created a set of postcards, each celebrating one of our values, with space for a handwritten message explaining what someone did and why it mattered.

“I think we should recognise and celebrate when our colleagues demonstrate great values,” he says. “I wanted something I could give to people I meet through my role, a quick way of saying, ‘That was great. You really demonstrated a particular Southdown value when you did that.’”

It might be taking the time to listen, helping a colleague through a difficult day or finding a thoughtful solution to a problem.

A postcard is a small gesture, but taking a moment to notice someone’s contribution can mean a great deal.

Last Saturday was World Mental Health Day, and it was great to see so many voices coming together to talk about the importance of good mental health and the support people need.

Keeping that conversation going also means helping people know where to turn when things feel difficult.

Staying Well offers welcoming, out-of-hours support for adults aged 18 and over who are experiencing mental distress, feel unable to cope or need support during a mental health crisis. It provides a space to talk about how you’re feeling, be listened to and get help to manage distress.

Southdown runs Staying Well in Brighton & Hove, Eastbourne and Hastings, in partnership with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Services are also available in Crawley, run by Waythrough and Worthing, run by West Sussex Mind.

You can access Staying Well directly, without a referral, and alongside any other mental health support you receive.

Finding mental health information and support can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already finding things difficult.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re sharing How Are You Really Feeling? to help people across Sussex find information, advice and support that’s right for them.

Lived experience and co-production were at the heart of developing this resource, making it especially relevant to this year’s theme: “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change”.

People’s experiences matter, both in conversations about mental health and in shaping the resources available to support us.

If how you’re feeling is affecting your day-to-day life, or you’re looking for information to support someone else, explore:

This World Mental Health Day, we’re recognising the importance of listening to people’s experiences, and using what we learn to make a difference.

This year’s theme, “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change”, reminds us that people who have experienced mental health challenges bring valuable knowledge about what helps, what needs to change and what good support looks like.

At Southdown, we place importance on lived experience across our work. Our UOK networks in Brighton & Hove and East Sussex have lived experience advisory groups, bringing people’s perspectives and ideas into the work we do together with our partners.

We can all help someone feel heard: make time, listen without judgement and give them space to share as much or as little as they choose.

Listening, learning and acting on people’s experiences matter every day — well beyond World Mental Health Day.

October is Black History Month. It is an opportunity for all of us to come together to celebrate Black history, culture and the contributions of Black people to our communities.

This year’s theme, “Honouring Our Communities”, recognises the people whose everyday contributions bring us together, offer support and create a sense of belonging.

At Southdown, we recognise the Black colleagues, tenants, people we support and partners who are part of our communities across Sussex. Honouring our communities means recognising the people who shape them and valuing the experiences and contributions they bring — reflecting our values of being Brilliant with People and United.

This month, take time to discover stories, learn more about Black British history and celebrate Black voices. That learning and recognition belong throughout the year.

Support should feel easy to access, local and welcoming.

The UOK Wellbeing Service, delivered by Southdown as part of the UOK Mental Health & Wellbeing network, offers walk-in welcome sessions for adults across Brighton & Hove and East Sussex.

These sessions bring mental health and wellbeing support into local hubs and community spaces, so people can access help closer to where they live, without needing a referral or joining a waiting list.

At a walk-in welcome session, you can talk to us about what’s going on for you and explore what support might be helpful next.

Find the latest schedule and more information at www.uok.org.uk/service/uok-wellbeing-service/, or scan the QR code on the graphic.
