Lewes Town Council The parish authority for Lewes, East Sussex and responsible for allotments, benches, bus stops, CCTV and we offer community grants.

We manage Lewes Town Hall, All Saints Centre and Malling Community Centre and Lewes Priory, the Pells and Landport Bottom. Lewes Town Council is one of the 300 largest of the 10,000-or-so parish councils in England and Wales, with expenditure budgeted at just over £1million. It is the successor to Lewes Borough Council, which was incorporated in 1881. We are based at the Town Hall, in the High Street, which has been the home of Lewes’ local council since 1893.

One of the less well-known parts of being Mayor is attending civic events across Sussex and beyond, like the Judges' Service in Chichester.

It was an honour and a pleasure to represent Lewes at this annual event, organised by the High Sheriffs of West Sussex and East Sussex. The Service recognises and honours the judiciary, magistrates, coroners and family courts, police officers, emergency services, and members of the voluntary and charitable sectors involved in upholding the peace.

Ceremonies like this create an opportunity to build relationships and strengthen connections across the county. It's always a pleasure to meet counterparts from across Sussex, and a real privilege to represent the town.

For this week’s , we're taking a look at Lancaster Street, which you may have noticed was closed on Tuesday while scenes for The Choir were being filmed. 🎬

Long before the cameras arrived, Lancaster Street was home to the British School, one of the earliest Lancasterian schools outside London. Opened in 1809, it provided education for children from poorer families in Lewes and eventually taught up to 400 pupils.

The school was known for its progressive approach to education, although its methods of discipline might raise a few eyebrows today! Rather than corporal punishment, pupils could find themselves suspended in a basket from the classroom rafters or walking around with a block of wood chained to an ankle.

Wonderful evening at the Lewes Bonco costume competition! A brilliant curtain-raiser for the main event on the Fifth...

Thank you to Bonco for inviting me to hand out the prizes, and for organising everything so well. And congratulations to Waterloo Bonfire Society for winning the points cup.

Big thanks to Councillor James Herbert for giving out the prizes to the children's classes (I had to attend the Judge's Service in Chichester Cathedral). Thanks to Roz Bassford for taking and sharing these lovely photos. And thanks to all of the judges, who put a lot of thought and effort into their scoring.

And, of course, well done and thanks to everyone who competed and attended on the night!

(And congratulations to South Street Bonfire Society for a very creditable third place. Not that I'm biased, of course 😉)

Honouring our Communities: Anthony Kalume

We're pleased to share the second interview in our Honouring our Communities series for Black History Month UK, celebrating the people who help make Lewes a welcoming, vibrant and inclusive place to live.

This week, we speak to Anthony Kalume, Chair of diversitylewes.org.uk , co-Director of Culture Connect Project CIC, Visiting Lecturer at the University of Brighton, and a dedicated community activist who has spent more than 20 years bringing people together through community projects, education and cultural events.

Reflecting on the importance of community, Anthony says:

"Our strong sense of purpose to come together to create cohesion and harmony regardless of division and differences is what gives meaning to the entity that we have created called Diversity Lewes."

In the interview, Anthony shares his inspiration, his favourite place in Lewes, his hopes for young people, and his vision of a future where understanding, inclusion and respect help communities thrive.
