Lewes Town Council The parish authority for Lewes, East Sussex and responsible for allotments, benches, bus stops, CCTV and we offer community grants.

We manage Lewes Town Hall, All Saints Centre and Malling Community Centre and Lewes Priory, the Pells and Landport Bottom. Lewes Town Council is one of the 300 largest of the 10,000-or-so parish councils in England and Wales, with expenditure budgeted at just over £1million. It is the successor to Lewes Borough Council, which was incorporated in 1881. We are based at the Town Hall, in the High Street, which has been the home of Lewes’ local council since 1893.

🎨 Pattern & Pigment: Celebrating Young Artists of Lewes

Lewes Town Council is delighted to host Lewes Priory School at Lewes Town Hall as part of this year's Artwave Festival.

Pattern & Pigment is a vibrant exhibition showcasing artwork created by students from Lewes Priory School, alongside pieces produced through the school's outreach workshops with local primary schools. Bringing together colour, creativity and collaboration, the exhibition celebrates the artistic talent and imagination of young people from across our community.

Visitors can explore a joyful collection of patterns, designs and mixed-media artworks that reflect the creativity, inspiration and hard work of the students involved.

Make your own Zine
Join RTS Zines to make your own zine, a mini magazine to share your voice with the world! Experiment with collage, drawing, cutting, and writing to create your own DIY publication.

All ages welcome (help will be needed for under 5’s)

This session is free, drop in, no booking required. The session runs from 1.30pm until 3.30pm. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

The 19th Lewes Societies Fair returns to Lewes Town Hall on Saturday 5 September 2026, offering residents and visitors the chance to discover the wide range of clubs, societies and community organisations that make Lewes such a vibrant and welcoming town.

Whether you are looking to take up a new hobby, meet new people, learn a skill, volunteer, or become more involved in local life, the fair provides an excellent opportunity to explore the many groups and activities available in the area.

Visitors will be able to meet representatives from a diverse range of local societies, clubs and community groups, as well as visit an exhibition about the Battle of Lewes. Refreshments will be available throughout the morning.

Lovely to join the brilliant Lewes Astronomical Society at Landport picnic! Thank you for inviting me.

They were demonstrating their solar telescopes; could clearly see sunspots and the occasional prominence.

I'm proud to have been a member for many years now. Really great local organisation that puts on monthly talks (open to everyone) and regular free observing sessions. They'll be at the Herstmonceux Astronomy Festival this weekend coming too.

Join Lewes Astronomical Society on Wednesday 2 September 2026 for an intriguing talk by Greg Smye-Rumsby exploring the Flat Earth conspiracy theory and the scientific evidence that has challenged it for centuries.

This week's is all about the Meridian obelisk which was erected on 8 November 1938 by the then Mayor of Lewes, Alderman E.T. Hall.

The obelisk marks the exact spot where the Prime Meridian of Greenwich (0° longitude) passes through Lewes. At the time, Lewes was the only borough in England, apart from Greenwich itself, to officially recognise this remarkable geographical distinction.

Standing around 15 feet high, the obelisk was designed by borough surveyor Charles Butler and originally featured a bronze emblem representing the celestial and terrestrial meridians. The monument was gifted by John Every. Sadly, the bronze emblem was stolen in 2008, although it is hoped that it would one day be replaced.

The road where the monument stands was aptly named Meridian Road, reflecting its connection to the line that helps define positions across the globe. The Prime Meridian became the internationally agreed standard for measuring longitude in the late 19th century, making this small corner of Lewes part of a story with global significance.
