Hello, I’m Julia - and I am incredibly blessed to call the Yorkshire Dales my home. Today, the National Park has handed their socials over to me so I can share a glimpse of what it’s like to live here.

I love my walks along the river with my dog. At 7:30am early morning dew sparkles on the grass, birds are in full voice, and the river provides its steady, calming soundtrack. Branches bow gently over the path… though some now seem to be decorated with a rather less natural ornament: neatly tied dog poo bags. The path itself is intermittently “marked” by deposits left behind by owners who, apparently, feel this particular task is someone else’s problem. Even the dry stone wall has been thoughtfully accessorised.

Wait, something isn’t right! That’s clearly not how the narrative should go…. It does make one wonder: what has happened to the dog poo fairies? Have they joined forces with the litter fairies and gone on strike? If so, they’ve been remarkably consistent in their absence.

Sadly, while the fairies remain unavailable for the foreseeable future, the responsibility does not disappear. Sheep graze these fields, and contamination from dog waste can pose serious health risks to livestock through infected grass and water. It can also spread worms and parasites to other dogs and wildlife.

So, until normal fairy service is resumed, may I suggest a simple, human alternative: If you’re reading this post, I’m sure you love the countryside as much as me and wouldn’t dream of despoiling it by leaving excrement but clearly there are many people who do so spread the word: if your dog leaves it, you take it. Spread the word to all dog owners. Bag it, bin it, and help keep this place as lovely as it is meant to be.

Hello, I’m Julia - and I am incredibly blessed to call the Yorkshire Dales my home. Today, the Yorkshire Dales National Park has handed their socials over to me so I can share a glimpse of what it’s like to live here.

I live on the River Wharfe near Grassington. Each morning, I open my curtains with excited anticipation and behold a wonderful view. Sometimes the hills are wrapped in soft mist, inviting curiosity about what lies beyond. On brighter days, dry stone walls glisten in the sunlight, rain showers bring rainbows, and the fields come alive with wildflowers, curlews and rabbits.

But sadly, on weekends when the sun shines brightly, that beauty is replaced by something very different: bags of rubbish, broken glass, and empty cans scattered across the riverbank.
Over the recent bank holiday, many visitors came to enjoy this special place. Most were respectful, took their litter home, and helped protect the Dales - thank you. Unfortunately, many others did not. Fires and barbecues were lit, despite clear signage instructing against this, leaving scars on the land and posing risk of fire. Rubbish was left behind, endangering wildlife, grazing livestock, and those of us who live here — including my young children.

If you’re reading this, you likely care deeply about the countryside. You understand how special and fragile it is. But we need your help to spread that message further.

Leaving litter and lighting fires is damaging, dangerous, and avoidable. Worse, it isn’t done carelessly, it is intentional and some of those people I have politely asked to put out fires and take their litter home have responded rudely and aggressively. Social attitudes can change. Just as drink driving and smoking indoors became unacceptable, littering and damaging the countryside can too.

Please help us make that happen. Share this post with everyone you know, make your feelings known to them and ask them to share too. Talk about it. Encourage others to respect the places they visit.

Together, we can protect the Yorkshire Dales — for everyone who loves it and for generations to come.

The Wildlife‑Rich Habitat Fund (WRHF) is now open - we've £££ available to support ambitious projects that will create and restore wildlife‑rich habitats across the Dales. We’re looking to support landscape-scale initiatives that deliver real impact - from upland hay meadows and native woodlands to wetlands, peatland restoration, and river corridors.

✅ Who should apply? Conservation charities, farmer clusters, estates, businesses, and landowners ready to work at scale.
💡 What we can fund: Habitat creation works, hydrological and peatland restoration, planting and seeding, fencing and infrastructure — plus essential surveys and design.
