A throwback to 2012 when we discovered a photo from around 1893 that shows a clear view of the lost greenhouse on the back of the courtyard.

If you have any old photos of Bank Hall and its gardens that we can physically or digitally add to our historical archive collection, we would love to see them, as we are currently preparing a special garden exhibition display for a special weekend event in Summer 2027. (Watch this space for more details nearer the time).

💷 All proceeds and donations raised by our events go towards the Potting Shed & Walled Garden Restoration Project which will see the buildings restored into a visitor entrance, cafe and community space.

The Walled Garden is already featuring many beautiful flowers and plants that are tended to by our volunteers. Once restoration is completed this heritage asset will be used to educate visitors on horticulture, heritage and health and wellbeing in this beautiful setting which is also a bee and butterfly haven. 🐝

A really great post from Cocker Bar Orchard, which is only down the road from Bank Hall on the way to Leyland.
As this area of Lancashire was historically heavily covered with fruit trees in orchards, which unfortunately many have been lost. However, at Cocker Bar Orchard they are trying to preserve some of our local heritage apple and pear trees.
At Bank Hall we have a few remaining apple trees in our Walled Garden, the site of the new build enabling development on the other side of the Walled Garden wall was the site of our pear orchard.

"Plant pears for your heirs". A 17th century English proverb. 🍐

Before modern rootstock and grafting techniques, pear trees were very vigorous trees (around 30-40t), and pears were by far the dominant fruit type in the Leyland/Eccleston area in the 1700s.

These could take up to 10 years to fruit and up to 30 years to mature, at a time when the life expectancy for a farmer was just over 40.

Therefore, when the farmers were digging the holes to plant these trees, they knew they weren't the ones to get the reward...
