🏵️Industry Day at Exercise Rose Dragon 🐉✈️

Yesterday, cadets from 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron attending Exercise Rose Dragon took part in an exciting Industry Day, made up of a wide range of activities supported by Wales Police, the Fire and Rescue Service and RAF Careers.

Cadets also took part in activities specifically designed to help them develop important employability skills, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving and confidence.

Exercise Rose Dragon is a week-long, multi-activity residential camp run by the Wales and West Region of the Air Cadets. Currently being attended by an incredible 450 cadets, the exercise offers a packed programme of activities, adventure and development opportunities.

A fantastic opportunity for cadets to learn, develop valuable life skills and discover more about the exciting opportunities available to them in the future! 👏

✈️ Eyes to the Sky at RAF Cosford!🇬🇧

Today, cadets from 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron were at RAF Cosford for an exciting day with No. 8 Air Experience Flight.

Our cadets had the fantastic opportunity to experience the world of military aviation up close, gaining valuable insight into flying and the opportunities available through the Air Cadets. ✈️🛩️

The cadets were accompanied by Flying Officer Perkins and newly appointed Sergeant Woodldride.
It is particularly pleasing to welcome Sgt Woodldride into the NCO ranks. Having previously served the Squadron as a Civilian Instructor, they have chosen to take the next step and become a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Air Cadets.

A great example of how adult volunteers can develop their own skills and careers while continuing to support and inspire the next generation of cadets. 👏

A huge thank you to the team at 8 AEF for another memorable experience and for giving our cadets the opportunity to take their first steps towards the skies!

✈️ EYES TO THE SKY! 🇬🇧

There was certainly no missing the sound of history overhead in Lichfield earlier today!

Our Cadet Anderton from 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron was out with eyes firmly to the sky as the iconic Battle of Britain Memorial Flight passed overhead. What an incredible sight — and a fantastic opportunity for our cadets to see a living piece of RAF history right above their home city.

For young people with an interest in aviation, few things can inspire quite like seeing these magnificent aircraft flying where they belong — in the sky. 🛩️

Moments like this are a great reminder of the heritage, sacrifice and achievements that sit at the heart of the Royal Air Force and the inspiration they continue to provide to the next generation.

🌞🌑 LOOK UP! A CELESTIAL SHOW IS UNDERWAY! 🌑🌞

Today gives you a fantastic opportunity to witness a solar eclipse .

This dramatic partial solar eclipse is visible across the UK. In the Lichfield and West Midlands area, the event begins at approximately 18:15, reaches maximum coverage (around 90-91% of the Sun obscured) at about 19:11, and ends by 20:04.

This event is a brilliant reminder that space science isn't just something we study in the classroom… sometimes it happens right above our heads! 🚀🔭

There is still time to make your own shoebox pinhole projector and safely watch the eclipse.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN, even during an eclipse. A pinhole projector lets you observe the eclipse safely by projecting an image of the Sun.

📦 What you'll need
An empty cardboard box — the longer it is, the larger the image of the Sun
White paper
Scissors
Aluminium foil
A pin
Tape

🔧 How to make it
Open the box and use tape to cover one of the inner sides with white paper.

On the opposite side, cut two holes side by side and at least 10 cm apart — one to let sunlight in and one to look through.

Cover the Sun hole with aluminium foil and tape it securely in place.
Use the pin to make a tiny hole in the aluminium foil.

Seal the box tightly.

🌞 How to use your eclipse projector
Turn your back to the Sun.
Look through the viewing hole and position yourself until you can see the Sun projected onto the white paper.

As the Moon moves across the Sun, you'll see its shadow slowly cover the projected image. 🌑

It's simple, inexpensive and a great little piece of space science you can make at home!

🌞🌑 LOOK UP, 1206! — SOLAR ECLIPSE TOMORROW! 🌑🌞

Cadets of 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron — time to put your Space knowledge into practice! 🚀🔭

Tomorrow, Wednesday 12 August, we’ll be treated to a spectacular partial solar eclipse visible from Lichfield.

📍 Lichfield timings:🌘 Eclipse begins: 6:14pm🌑 Maximum eclipse: 7:11pm — around 93% of the Sun will be covered!🌘 Eclipse ends: 8:05pm

The Sun will be getting very low in the western sky, so find somewhere with a clear, unobstructed view towards the west/west-south-west.

⚠️ MOST IMPORTANT — PROTECT YOUR EYES! ⚠️

Even though most of the Sun will be hidden, it is NEVER safe to look directly at a partial solar eclipse without proper solar eye protection.

🕶️ Use certified eclipse glasses/solar viewers meeting ISO 12312-2.
❌ Normal sunglasses — even very dark ones — are NOT safe.
❌ Never look through binoculars, a telescope or camera unless it has a proper solar filter fitted to the front of the equipment.🔭 If you don't have suitable eclipse glasses, use an indirect viewing method such as a pinhole projector.

NASA's advice is clear: viewing the partially eclipsed Sun without proper protection can cause serious and permanent eye injury.

🌌 SPACE SYLLABUS CONNECTION

This is a great opportunity to take what you learn in the RAF Air Cadets Space syllabus and see some real astronomy happening above Lichfield!

The Blue Space syllabus covers the Solar System, the Moon and its influence on Earth, making a solar eclipse a perfect example of those concepts in action.

📸 Challenge: If you safely observe the eclipse, let us know what you saw and share your best safe eclipse photographs with the Squadron!

This is a fantastic achievement, reflecting dedication, resilience, and outstanding leadership potential. The course is designed to challenge and develop Civilian Adult Volunteers into confident leaders, and your success is a true testament to your hard work and commitment.

Plt Off Perkins started at 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadets as a Civilian Instructor but wanted to further her commitment by taking a commission with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

🚀🎈 Corporal Perkins Gets His Space Legs! 🎈🚀

Under the watchful supervision of Staffordshire Wing’s very own Teddy Bear, Sir Douglas Bear'der, Corporal Perkins from 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron was getting properly pumped up! 🐻🎈

As part of his Bronze Space Qualification at the Staffordshire Wing Training Weekend at Parsons Barracks, Donnington, Corporal Perkins was busy designing and building a balloon-powered hovercraft.

With Sir Douglas Bear'der keeping a close eye on proceedings, the mission was simple: inflate, release and HOVER! 🚀😂

A great example of how the Space syllabus combines practical STEM skills, creativity, teamwork and a healthy willingness to let a balloon do the driving!

🎖️ Congratulations Private Hamilton Martin! 🎖️

A huge congratulations to Private Hamilton Martin (Archie) on successfully completing his initial training with the Army Reserve.

Following his initial training, Archie has now completed two weeks of Battle Camp, putting his military skills and training to the test in a demanding field environment.

He will now continue his training in his chosen role within the Adjutant General’s Corps (AGC).

The AGC provides the British Army with specialist expertise in areas including personnel administration, human resources, military policing, education, legal services and other vital personnel-support functions. It plays an essential role in ensuring the Army's people are supported, managed and prepared to operate effectively.

Archie's military journey actually began much closer to home. He originally joined 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron as a Cadet, before returning to the Squadron as an Adult Volunteer Civilian Instructor, giving back to the organisation that had helped him develop.

With his new status as an Army Reservist, Archie's role within the Air Cadets has now changed to that of a Service Instructor, allowing him to bring his growing military experience and knowledge directly into his work with our cadets.

We are incredibly proud of Archie and are sure that the growing depth of military knowledge and experience he is developing will be a real benefit to our cadets, supporting both their training and their wider personal development.

Well done, Private Martin — from Air Cadet to Army Reservist! 🇬🇧🎖️✈️

A huge congratulations to Cadet Whitfield from 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron on her fantastic performance in the 4 × 100m relay at today’s Wales and West Regional Athletics Championship! 🏃‍♀️🏅

The relay is not just about speed — it is about sprint, teamwork, trust and timing.

Every runner must give their best, work together and ensure the baton is passed smoothly to the next member of the team.

Much like life in the Air Cadets, success often depends on individuals combining their strengths, supporting one another and working towards a shared goal. 💙✈️

🚀 Congratulations to our Bronze Space Cadets! 🌌

A huge well done to the cadets from 1206 City of Lichfield Air Cadet Squadron who successfully achieved their Bronze Space Award during the Staffordshire Wing Training Weekend at Parsons Barracks, Donnington. 👏

The RAF Air Cadets’ Progressive Space Training Syllabus gives cadets the opportunity to explore the fascinating world beyond our atmosphere.

The programme develops knowledge and understanding through a series of progressive awards, taking cadets from the fundamentals of space and astronomy through to more advanced subjects.

The Bronze Space Award introduces cadets to key areas including:

🪐 The Solar System and the objects within it

🌟 Stars, galaxies and the wider universe

🚀 Space exploration and the technology used to explore beyond Earth

🛰️ Satellites and their importance in modern life

🌌 The science and challenges of operating in space

By completing the Bronze award, our cadets have taken their first major step on the Space syllabus, with opportunities to progress through Silver, Gold, developing increasingly advanced knowledge and practical skills.

Well done to everyone who completed the award. Your hard work, enthusiasm and willingness to explore new horizons have certainly been out of this world! 🚀✨
