It's a great opportunity to pick up some early Christmas presents, enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake, catch up with friends and neighbours — and support a much-loved local charity at the same time.

💛 Liphook Day Centre – A Fun, Friendly Place for Older People to Meet, Laugh & Enjoy Themselves!

Think “day centre for the elderly” sounds a bit dull? Think again! 😄

Do you know an older person who would enjoy a friendly day out, good company, activities, laughter and a delicious home-cooked lunch? Or perhaps you are a family member or carer who could do with a little extra support and some time to yourself?

Liphook Day Centre is a lively, welcoming social centre for older people – not a room full of people sitting quietly staring at the walls! We believe getting older shouldn't mean getting lonely, and our days are filled with friendship, conversation, laughter and things to do.

There's always something going on, including:

🎨 Arts, crafts and creative activities
🎲 Games, quizzes and puzzles
🎶 Singing, music and entertainment
💃 Armchair dancing and gentle exercise
🐾 Visits from our lovely PAT dogs
🍰 Homemade cakes and afternoon tea
🍽️ A delicious two-course, home-cooked lunch
☕ Plenty of tea, coffee, conversation and laughter!

Our clients range from their 70s through to their 90s, and everyone is encouraged to join in as much – or as little – as they wish. You don't need to be particularly active or outgoing. Sometimes a cup of tea, a chat and a good laugh with friends is all you need for a great day. ❤️

We also welcome people who may be living with memory problems or dementia, providing a friendly, supportive and understanding environment.

For families and carers, the Day Centre can provide some much-needed respite, knowing that your loved one is spending the day somewhere safe, welcoming and enjoyable.

🚐 Mini-bus transport is available within Liphook, making it easier for clients to get to and from the Centre.

🚐 Volunteer Mini-Bus Driver Wanted – Thursdays 💛

Liphook Day Centre is looking for a kind and reliable volunteer driver to join our team on Thursdays.

After an amazing 10 years of dedicated service, our previous volunteer driver is now retiring, so we are looking for someone to take over this important role.

We need a volunteer to drive our mini-bus to collect and return elderly clients from their homes in Liphook, helping them safely on and off the bus and into the Day Centre every Thursday.

🕤 Morning: approximately 9.30am–10.15am
🕒 Afternoon: approximately 3.00pm–3.30pm
📍 Liphook

Many of our clients use walking sticks, frames or walkers, and some need a little extra help getting on and off the bus. We also have an electric access ramp for those who need it. You would then help clients safely from the bus into the Day Centre.

No special licence or previous experience is required – what matters most is that you are patient, kind, caring and generally fit and well. Full guidance will be provided.

This is a really rewarding volunteering opportunity. Our mini-bus is an important lifeline for some of our clients, helping them to attend the Day Centre, enjoy friendship and activities, have a lovely home-cooked lunch and, importantly, remain connected with their community. 💛

Keep an eye on elderly neighbours and friends during this heatwave 🌞

A quick check-in, making sure they have water, keeping curtains closed, and helping with shopping or errands can make a real difference. Heat can affect older people more quickly, so a little support goes a long way.

We're all hot and it feels like the last thing any of us want to do, but it is essential to keep moving. Some simple, gentle movements still help to keep us mobile and armchair yoga is a great way to prevent stiffness and retain flexibility.

At Liphook Day Centre, we believe that no one should feel alone. We offer a warm and welcoming place where older people can enjoy companionship, share a home-cooked meal, join in activities and crafts, and most importantly, make meaningful friendships.

Whether you're feeling isolated yourself, know someone who could benefit from company, or simply want to become part of a friendly community, we'd love to welcome you. Many of our members have found not only friendship at the Day Centre, but renewed confidence, laughter, and something to look forward to each week.

A lovely poem called 'I Can't Remember' (unfortunately unknown author)

Just a line to say I’m living,
that I’m not amongst the dead,
though I’m getting more forgetful
and mixed up in my head.

I got used to my arthritis,
to dentures I’m resigned,
I can manage my bifocals
but God I miss my mind,

For sometimes I can’t remember,
when I stand at the foot of the stairs,
if I must go up for something,
or have I just come down from there.

And before the fridge so often,
my poor mind is filled with doubt,
have I just put some food away,
or have I come to take some out?

And there’s the time when it is dark
with my dressing gown wrapped tight,
I don’t know if I’m retiring,
or just getting out of bed at night.

So if it’s my turn to write to you,
there’s no need for getting sore,
I might think that I have written
and don’t want to be a bore.

So, remember that I miss you
and wish that we could meet
but now it’s nearly mail time
so I must say goodnight, my mate.

There I sit beside my laptop
with a face so very red,
instead of emailing you my message,
I’ve deleted it instead!

What a fabulous afternoon of fun we had yesterday. Liphook Day Centre did Ladies Day at the Races, complete with fabulous hats, races, yay or neigh quiz and lots of laughing. A special thank you must go out to our volunteer, Wendy Karban , who made it all happen. Brilliant, silly fun!
