Since the flash floods caused destruction in Nepal on 26th August, more than 50,000 people have been impacted and more than 900 have died.

Habitat Nepal is closely assessing the situation and coordinating with partners and government to identify urgent needs, in order to reach those most in need. Starting with immediate shelter kits, technical assessments, and transitional shelters through to building climate resilient homes over the long-term there is much to be done and we need your support.

Yesterday was the final day on-site for the team from Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church & St. Colmcille’s Parish, who have spent their week supporting our partner programmes in Romania 🇷🇴 As their experience came to a close, the team shared a final reflection:

“Well, where did THAT week go!

We’ve had a very productive trip. On arrival there was 1 fully occupied semi detached bungalow and 2 more under construction. They were built and roofed, with doors and windows installed, bathroom and kitchen areas tiled and all interior ceilings and walls lined, with some scrimmed and skimmed. There was shuttering in place for 4 doorsteps, and for a pathway around one house.

We have met Andrei from Habitat Romania and Andrei our site volunteer manager, Robert the building site manager, and various bricklayers, joiners, cement mixer operators and homeowners, both present and future.

In 5 days we have mixed and laid concrete for 4 double doorsteps, 4 surrounding pathways; completed skrimming and skimming 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 4 kitchen areas, 4 living areas, and 4 small hallways, both walls and ceilings.

And today we had a digger on site, starting on the foundations of a 4th unit.

We’ve had mostly perfect weather (if a little hot). We’ve been driven back and forth between hotel and building site by a very pleasant bus driver, past a range of terrains, residential, commercial and industrial buildings with a variety of traffic types such as motorbikes, horse drawn wagons, even an aeroplane!

The next phase is the painting of walls and ceilings, the installation of kitchen and bathroom fixtures and fittings and, running concurrently with that, the laying of founds for a 4th set of semis.

Today there was a special visit from Habitat Romania, bearing a sincere message of thanks for our support, our skills (?) and our visit; and also several bags of delicious pastries.

Following reflections, where we gave thanks to God for His loving care, we ended with a version of the Irish Blessing, in 4 part harmony.

Support for Nepal 🇳🇵

Earlier this week, flash flooding devastated communities in Nepal & Tibet causing major destruction and damage. Homes have been washed away. Families have been torn apart, many searching for their loved ones in the aftermath.

As of today in Nepal, more than 900 people are missing and 547 have died as a result of the disaster. Approximately 10,000 families have been affected, many of whom are highly vulnerable and require immediate assistance.

Our colleagues on the ground are safe, and Habitat Nepal is closely assessing the situation and coordinating with partners and government to identify urgent needs, in order to reach those most in need.

At the end of Day 3 on-site in Romania, team member Julie May Noteman shared a reflection on her experience 💭 and we wanted to share it with you all:

“White mist on the hills and spits of rain. Blue ponchos were given to the outside team, creating the impression of a small flock of bluebirds, wings outstretched to wheelbarrows and shovels and metal concreting rods as concrete was mixed and poured and the paths around the houses became full and grey and smooth. Those inside found their rhythm in plaster, scrim tape and drill - delighted with themselves at being better and knowing more than the day before and the day before and the day before that, when they knew nothing. We went to visit Georgina and her two children in the end house, completed and lived in - neat as a pin in anticipation. Georgiana shyly explained how far they had come since their one roomed apartment where family life had been a struggle. The clouds shifted outside, and, as her daughter danced around us, proudly skipping through the bedroom and living room we were reminded that what we are helping to build here in Romania are not just houses…they are homes.”

In the face of the devastating earthquake that has impacted thousands, our hearts and prayers are with the people of Nepal.

We are working with our colleagues at Habitat Nepal who have immediately activated our Humanitarian Response team and planning how we will urgently support families who have lost everything.

We have a wonderful update from the Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church & St Colmcilles Parish team who are currently supporting our long-term partner programme in Romania 📸

“Day 2 on site was in the beautiful Romanian sunshine. Today plastering work progressed in one house and we ventured into the second house. Outside it was dirty and sweaty work making and laying the cement surrounds for the houses. Friendships blossom and our Romanian builders are engaging more each day as we all get into our groove. Our 4 first time Volunteers are loving their Habitat journey and appreciate the significance of this work for local families. Everyone left site with a smile as our end of day farewell included a silly song with actions for builders, home owners and volunteers.”
