More than a sweet treat, koeksisters are part of South Africa’s living culinary heritage.

A recipe appeared in Hildagonda Duckitt’s 1891 Cape cookbook, Hilda’s “Where Is It?” of Recipes—published during Emily Hobhouse’s lifetime.

Ours are handmade in the traditional plaited style, fried until golden and dipped hot into cold sugar syrup. Find them in the Restaurant. 🇿🇦

🌿Join Christina in the Kitchen Garden, where even a broken branch marks the start of a new chapter.

Our perennial kale has the resilience to root from cuttings, meaning that whenever a stem breaks away, it can simply be planted and start its story of growth again.

Christina often shares cuttings with curious guests, helping a little piece of The Story of Emily to continue to grow elsewhere.

It's a lovely reminder that gardens are places where knowledge, generosity and stories may be shared.

The Story of Emily is a journey through place, memory, conflict, care and consequence.

That means the architecture had to do more than create buildings. It had to help shape how visitors move, pause, feel, reflect and understand.

The site brings together the Rectory, War Rooms, Restaurant, gardens, boardwalk, woodland walk, contemplation spaces and views across the landscape. Each part has its own purpose, and together they form one carefully paced experience.

The architecture helps to tell story and works alongside interpretation, landscape, archive, food, planting, light and atmosphere.
