Phills Woods

The time has come to tell the story of Phill’s Woods located in South Liverpool. Many of you have probably walked there and seen the three plaques and wondered about the story.

I am Phillip’s sister and the woods were planted by my father Jackie Gore in memory of my brother Phillip. Phill sadly died in 1990 aged 23 after a short battle with cancer. Phillip was an archaeologist devoted environmentalist and vegan even back then. As a small boy he loved to climb trees and would often go missing up into the boughs.

When he tragically died Dad was inconsolable and would go on daily long walks with one of his dogs, missing for hours but we just let him be in his grief. It was years later we finally found out where he was going and what he was up to. Dad had decided to plant a woods in Phill’s memory on a disused field at the back of Clarke’s Gardens in South Liverpool. He had grown from seed and planted thousands of different species of trees, collected saplings and erected 3 small plaques to mark out the area. It was about 10 years after he had started that he finally admitted to us what was going on up there. The park wardens and council on numerous occasions had tried to remove the plaques but Dad was undeterred in his grief and duly kept putting them back until they relented and just let him have his way.

This went on for over 25 years he continued to plant more and more trees. If you walk there you will see varieties not native to the area it’s quite an eclectic collection, Phillip would have loved it.

On what would have been Phillips 50th birthday Dad grew from seed a Monkey Puzzle tree and we planted it at the edge of the woods it will take 50 years to grow!

Dad is now almost 90 years old and no longer drives so it’s difficult for him to get up there now so the planting has ceased. My Father is a very private man but is now happy for me to tell his tale. I will now take over tending the plaque areas where he has planted lots of spring flowers to bloom around the date of Phillips death. Notably the bluebells which came from Delemare Forest where Phill was always up a tree!

Dads loyal dogs are all buried up in the area protecting the woods still.

So now you know the story of my truly amazing and wonderful Father and the undying love he has my dearly departed brother Phillip Gore 1966-1990.
