Echium pininana, also called Tree Echium, Pine Echium, and Giant Viper's-Bugloss, is a flowering plant within the borage family. Endemic to the Canary Islands, where it is restricted to the island of La Palma, it is nonetheless successfully cultivated in gardens of Britian and Ireland.

Echium pininana is a biennial, showing little more than foliage in the first year, but subsequently producing a dense, 4 meter high flower spike that carries a mass of small blue flowers.

IN THE 3/4 SPAN HOUSE: Although our greenhouses are closed at weekends The Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) obviously didn't get the memo. Native to tropical rainforests in the Phillipines, especially the island of Luzon, the twining stems reach up to 20 meters into the forest canopy, and from these stems the Vine's long, spectacular clusters of jade-green flowers hang down.

A member of the pea family (Leguminosae) The Jade Vine is pollinated naturally by bats who come to drink the nectar. Highly threatened in the wild due to deforestation for commercial logging, The Jade Vine can only be seen growing and flowering in Britain in a few botanical gardens.

If you visit Croxteth Walled Garden this week, make sure to give this beautiful plant a viewing!

Beautiful Magnolia stellata in the sunshine. Magnolia is an ancient genus, dating back to prehistoric times, and as a result it relies on beetles to pollinate it, which are attracted to the sweet, fragrant scent. Native to Japan, Magnolia stellata is more commonly called the 'Star Magnolia' for the shape of it's radiant petals.
