World Anaesthesia Day: Celebrating Liverpool’s Legacy of Innovation in Maternity Care 💜

Today, our Anaesthesia Team are proud to celebrate Liverpool’s remarkable contribution to the history of obstetric anaesthesia and the pioneers who helped transform the childbirth experience for women.

In the 1930s, Dr Robert James Minnitt revolutionised pain relief in labour by developing the Minnitt apparatus, making gas and air more accessible to women during childbirth 💨

In the 1960s, Dr Tom Bryson championed labour epidurals in Liverpool, helping to establish the city as a leading centre for obstetric anaesthesia and improving maternity care for generations of women 💉

Liverpool also played a key role in the creation of the Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association (OAA), with its foundations laid at Liverpool Maternity Hospital in 1969 🏥

Today, at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital, the Tom Bryson Department of Anaesthesia continues this legacy, providing expert care, driving innovation, and supporting women and families through some of life’s most important moments.

As we mark , we celebrate the clinicians, theatre teams, midwives, ODPs and support staff whose dedication continues to place women and families at the heart of everything we do.

From Minnitt to Bryson, and from Liverpool Maternity Hospital to Liverpool Women’s University Hospital, a legacy of innovation, compassion and excellence continues.

The annual Baby Loss Service of Remembrance will take place on Monday 12 October 2026 at St George’s Hall 💜

The service is a time for bereaved families, friends and the wider community to come together to remember and commemorate babies lost at any stage of pregnancy, birth or infancy.

As in previous years there will be two services:

Family service – doors will open at 4.30pm with refreshments and crafts.
Service will begin at 5.30pm.

Adult only service - doors will open at 7.15pm with refreshments and crafts.
Service will begin at 8pm.

You don’t have to book, you can turn up on the day.

Liverpool Women's University Hospital is organising an ultrasound course on Friday, the 11 September for doctors to improve their ultrasound skills.

We are looking for women who will be between 11 weeks and 34 weeks pregnant that would be willing to help us on the day by having an extra scan of the baby.

As a thank you we will offer pictures of the baby (provided the baby is in a good position) and a £10 voucher.
The scans will not harm you or the baby.
