Today we were honoured to host ‘Check Below Deck’, a pilot event we are proud to have helped develop in partnership with Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, the Cancer Alliance and with the amazing support of the Ministry of Defence’s Armed Forces Covenant scheme here in the NW.

The aim of the project is simple but vital….

Raising awareness of prostate and bowel cancer, encouraging early checks, and breaking down the stigma around talking about these issues specifically in the Armed Forces community here in Merseyside, but with an eventual aim of spreading this awareness campaign nationally to all serving and veteran personnel, alongside the myriad of connected UK companies that employ men at risk of these diseases.

We heard powerful, moving testimonies from veterans who have faced prostate cancer and come through it. Their honesty and courage were truly inspiring. The message from everyone, was “get checked” as early as possible.

The ‘Check Below Deck’ pilot launch was a real success, but this is just the beginning.

WATU TACTICS - OPERATION RASPBERRY ♟️

The War from the Floor. The first in the series exploring the different tactics created by WATU - Western Approaches Tactical Unit.

The first tactic we will explore is Raspberry; named by 3rd Officer Jean Laidlaw as an ode to ‘blowing a raspberry to Hitler’. This tactic paved the way towards a change in hunting U-boats during the battle of the Atlantic.

The tactic was used by Royal and allied Naval Officers serving on board the North Atlantic es**rts. Raspberry was based on a pre-existing tactic made by Captain Johnny Walker- ‘Buttercup’. It was used by officers to try and locate a U-boat that had made an attack on merchant ship then dived, and was first tactic to consider U-boats attacking within the es**rt screen rather than outside. Once the U-boat had made an attack on a merchant ship, the order ‘Raspberry’ would be given and es**rts would perform triangular sweeps in-ward of the convoy.

Remembering Leading Wren Helen Coop on her Birthday.

Helen Monica Coop was born in Liverpool on 4th September, 1911. She was the youngest of five sisters – Mary, Kitty, Joan, Nancy and Helen.

We have no idea how she was recruited to become a Wren and a plotter at WATU. She started at the Tactical School in 1943, one of the older Wrens on the team at 31 years old. She did not talk much about her work, but she formed many good friendships
while she served there, particularly with Janet Okell who she would meet once a week for lunch in central Liverpool well into the 1970s.

One memory she talked about was of a very handsome young officer, who was posted to Liverpool for some months and took the training course at WATU - the then Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. She said that he was useless as a plotter, but was VERY good looking.

As well as serving as a Wren, she also worked at night with her sister, Nancy, as an auxiliary
ambulance driver during the war. Both Nancy and Helen lived with their mother and their maid, Kate, in Waverley Road, off Sefton Park. The house was hit by a bomb during the May Blitz of 1941, on a night both Helen and Nancy were on shift as ambulance drivers. When they returned home they found their mother still sitting on a chair in the cupboard under the stairs.

After the war, Helen became the secretary to Ronald Farquharson, who managed the
shipping office for ICI Chemicals, based in India Buildings.
