🐔 A Little Update on Our Chickens 🐔
We’ve had a few people ask about the feathers in the chicken run, so we wanted to reassure everyone that Mabel and Effel are both absolutely fine❤️
The feathers you may have seen belong to Mabel. She is currently coming out of a broody period and is going through what is known as an intense moult. This is completely normal and is caused by hormonal changes that occur when a hen comes out of broodiness. During this process, hens can lose a significant number of feathers as old feathers are shed and replaced with new ones.
Effel also experienced this after her first broody period, but as she is a much smaller hen, she didn’t lose as many feathers. Mabel’s new feathers are already starting to grow through. These are known as pin feathers and can be quite sensitive, as they push through the skin. During this time, she may find being touched uncomfortable.
We kindly ask all parents, carers and visitors not to stroke or handle Mabel while she is growing her new feathers, so she can stay comfortable while they come through.
