This , we're delighted to announce that our Radiotherapy Department has successfully acquired two new bladder scanners to support our radiotherapy planning CT scanning services - one based at our Wirral site and one at our Liverpool site.
Bladder scanners play a key role in preparing patients for radiotherapy by enabling accurate assessment of bladder volume before CT planning scans. This helps ensure patients are in the optimal condition for their planning appointment, supporting safe and effective treatment while also making the process as smooth and comfortable as possible.
These new scanners will replace the single bladder scanner previously in use at CCC-W, ensuring continued service provision while expanding access across both sites (CCC-W and CCC-L). This investment supports a more equitable service for all patients, allowing more individuals to benefit from a smoother, and more efficient planning experience.
The scanning procedure itself is quick, simple, and non-invasive, typically taking only a few minutes, and is straightforward for healthcare professionals to perform. As these scanners use ultrasound, there is no additional radiation dose to the patient. By helping to reduce waiting times, minimise the need for repeat scans, and keep appointments running smoothly, this technology contributes to a more positive and reassuring experience for patients, while also supporting improved clinical outcomes.
Lesley Woods, CCC Radiotherapy Service and Development Lead, said:
"The radiotherapy team is delighted to receive this funding for the bladder scanners. The ability to assess bladder volume prior to acquiring a planning CT scan enables radiographers to determine whether any adjustments are needed before the patient receives a radiation dose. This not only enhances patient safety and comfort but also helps to reduce the time patients spend in the planning department. Overall, this investment delivers meaningful, patient centred benefits."
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Trust for their investment in the scanners, and to everyone involved in bringing this valuable equipment into everyday clinical use.
