Finding the person responsible may provide justice. It may also bring the search for truth to a premature end.

Once a culprit has been identified, reality becomes easier to organise: one person caused the harm, others suffered it and everyone else is released from further examination. Guilt is concentrated within a single body while the conditions that enabled the damage gradually disappear from view.

This episode does not deny individual responsibility or dissolve it within an abstract system. It asks whether one guilty person can ever provide the complete explanation. What about those who obeyed, remained silent, benefited from the outcome, normalised the harm or continued preserving the same conditions after condemning the person responsible?

Pain describes an experience. Identity can transform that experience into a definition.

Something happened to you. You were harmed, betrayed, abandoned, humiliated or used. The wound was real. But gradually, what happened can cease to be one part of your history and become the position from which you interpret your entire life.

This episode examines the moment “This happened to me” becomes “This is what I am”. The past begins organising the present. New relationships are viewed through an old wound, uncertainty resembles another threat and every contradiction is interpreted through what suffering taught you to expect.

This is not an attempt to blame those who have been harmed or deny the time required to heal. It asks how a wound can continue exercising power long after the person who caused it has disappeared.

This episode examines how victim survived while the world it once contained was gradually replaced. The being associated with an offering or sacrificial act came to be understood exclusively as someone who had suffered harm. Offering became loss. Participation became passive suffering. A relationship with the sacred became a moral relationship between innocence and guilt.

Before the word victim came to describe someone harmed by another person or event, the Latin victima referred to a living being destined or offered for sacrifice. Sacrifice, from sacrum facere, carried the meaning of making something sacred.

This episode returns to the world that existed before the victim was defined entirely by suffering. It examines the transformation through which sacrifice lost its sacred purpose, the offering became only a wound and the victim ceased to be understood through what was being given and became defined by what had been taken away.

This final chapter examines how identity, institutional prestige, education, social position and cultural authority influence what we are prepared to recognise as knowledge. The same idea may appear reasonable or absurd depending upon the person who expresses it.
