Mr Salih Abdella, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Eritrea, attended the countries' exhibition tour. It has been six years since we became part of the AU Head of Mission Social Committee by organising Africa Day in London. Each year, this event attracts more attendees and is becoming one of London's most important occasions. It is increasingly clear that Africa Day has significant potential as a platform that unites the African diplomatic corps, the African private sector, and the African diaspora.

May in Honour of the Great Day!
The celebration of the 35th Eritrean Independence Anniversary officially began on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in London, UK. As part of the “UK Independence Program,” the event was joyfully celebrated in cities including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, Nottingham, Coventry, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Cardiff, Glasgow, Wakefield, Leicester, and Newcastle on May 30. Participants were welcomed with smiles, and a range of well-organised programmes made the day unforgettable, showcasing the resilience and unity of Eritreans in the UK. The London celebration was attended by Mr Salih Abdella, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Eritrea to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Several diplomats, community leaders, representatives from various British institutions, professionals from different sectors, and other guests joined over 2,200 Eritrean British citizens residing in London.

A London-based cultural group provided musical entertainment as part of the opening ceremony. Mr Habom Tesfagiorgish, chair of the Organising Committee, opened the event by welcoming participants and wishing for its success. During the opening ceremony, Mr Ahmed Mohammed Mahmud, chairman of the British Eritrean Community Organisation Network (BECON), emphasised the significance of the event in uniting Eritreans. He noted its vital role in reinforcing identity and passing cherished societal values to future generations. Mr Tewelde Yohannes, Head of Public & Community Affairs, gave a speech highlighting the importance of the 35th Anniversary and the numerous events held across the United Kingdom. The keynote address was delivered by Mr Salih Abdella, who expressed gratitude to the participants for celebrating Eritrean Independence and provided updates on current affairs and developments. Following the speeches, traditional Eritrean entertainment continued with a vibrant musical lineup, culminating in a traditional Eritrean dance that brought everyone together. This year’s Independence Day was celebrated under the theme “Our Resilience: Our Guarantee,” creating a lively, spirited atmosphere.

May we honour this great day!
