Wonderful to have met up with Minister of Finance Ryan Straughn, M.P. last month when he stopped over in London on his way back home from attending a conference in Europe.
Ryan has been for over eight years a key figure in ensuring that the Barbados economy has grown and strengthened. We are indebted to his economic expertise as part of the team led by our Prime Minister in helping our nation survive crises such as the covid pandemic and in ensuring that our country continues to experience economic growth in every quarter since coming out of that disastrous pandemic.

The staff of the Barbados United Kingdom Mission and Tourism Marketing agency, together with some High Commissioners, other CARICOM nationals and British citizens including former England captain Mike Gatting, viewed the funeral of our first international legend, the Right Excellent Sir Garfield St. Auburn Sobers, OCC, from the famous Lord’s Cricket ground on 29th July, 2026.

Grateful to Lord’s management, headed by former England cricketer Mark Nicholas, for facilitating this occasion at the ground where some of our National Hero’s unforgettable performances were displayed.

Undoubtedly the finest all-round cricketer ever and arguably one of the six best sportsmen in the modern era, Sir Garry will live on in the memory of Caribbean people in the United Kingdom, not only for his exceptional cricketing achievements which lifted our psyche and self-esteem whilst our team dominated England’s as our nations emerged from British colonialism into Independence in the early and mid-1960s, but for the quality of his character.

Pleased to have visited Chatham House on 29th July, 2026, along with my wife Beverly, to hold discussions with Dr Christopher Sabatini, the Head of its Latin America and Caribbean Affairs department.

Also delighted to have caught up with Miss. Samantha Callender, Business Development Manager, the only Bajan working within the organisation.
This body, also referred to as the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is an independent policy and think tank organisation as well as a forum for debate, idea-sharing, thought leadership and open dialogue.

It aims to assist governments and societies to build a secure, sustainable, prosperous and just environment.

Our UK Mission will explore the possibility, together with our fellow UK CARICOM Missions, of engaging Chatham House together with other stakeholders in an open conference to discuss the challenges which we as small island developing states face as a result of adverse global and geopolitical affairs which we did not create and to offer solutions to these issues for our nations.
