Pinner Recreation Woodmeadow update Spring 2025

The woodmeadow is changing
Ox-eye Daisy is becoming a dominant plant whilst Wild Carrot is on the decline. Spiny Rest-harrow which suffered in the drought of 2022 has recovered and is doing well.

Back in November we planted 9 Elm trees in memory of Roger Heath who was a key person in this project who sadly died on 12 February 2023. We also controlled invasive False Acacia. Towards the end of February a new water supply was installed into the park. This is for watering the trees in a drought situation.

Steve Bolsover the Chair of the Harrow Nature Conservation Forum holds a key.

Frogs have laid lots of eggs into the Northwestern ditch.

We have events coming up a work party on Saturday 5th April to try to further diversify the grassland by reducing grass vigour. We intend to cut small areas rich in grasses, remove the cut grass and sow a parasitic wild flower called Yellow Rattle.

Yellow Rattle is a plant from the Broomrape Plant Family which are all parasitic on other plants; in this case the host plants are grasses. The parasite’s roots bind to the grass roots and remove water rich in dissolved compounds to its own roots. This weakens the grass allowing slower growing wildflowers to flourish.

We also are running an event to look at the wildlife of the park on Monday 7TH April - email [email protected]
