We were honoured to welcome Austrian Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr to London last week. Erasmus + was a key theme of the visit, given that the UK will officially rejoin the Erasmus + programme in 2027! 🇦🇹🇪🇺🇬🇧

Alongside his busy schedule, including meeting UK Minister for School Standards, Georgia Gould, attending the Education World Forum, and visiting the Oasis Academy in South Bank, we welcomed Minister Wiederkehr to the Embassy for a reception, and for a workshop run by the OeAD (Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation). It was a pleasure to host representatives from UK and Austrian educational institutions to talk about bilateral cooperation.

Steven Salamon’s book tells the story of a family of persecution and escape, survival and rebirth in Cardiff. At its heart, there are three generations of men and their family business in the 20th century 🇦🇹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Last week, we were delighted to launch the Austrian Women’s Salon at the Austrian Ambassador’s Residence! 🇦🇹

Deputy Head of Mission Katharina Rauscher welcomed inspiring women from different industries, and introduced the founders of the initiative, Alina Khachik and Theresa Bischof. They spoke about the network as a platform for women to support and connect with one another, taking inspiration from Viennese salons which brought together formative and creative voices and whose spirit continues through the Austrian Women’s Salon in London. We were particularly honoured to be joined by Austria’s First Lady, Doris Schmidauer, a longstanding advocate for gender equality, who emphasised how important initiatives like this are for women’s empowerment. 💪

With the support of ReFocus Austria, the Austrian Embassy London and are delighted to present a new international showcase for craftmanship as part of which is open over the weekend! 🎉

You can visit the Austrian Embassy to see the Meisterstrasse exhibition which brings together around 20 outstanding makers from 15 May to 17 May between 11am and 6pm. From interior design and architecture, to fine jewellery and customised fragrances, this exhibition offers a rich and diverse insight into both traditional and contemporary craftsmanship.

This year, the 70th Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Vienna, and to get everyone in the ESC spirit, we have put together a list of 70 Austrian songs for 70 years of ESC! 🇦🇹

From iconic classics to modern favourites, this playlist is a love letter to Austria’s musical heritage, and will introduce you to something new, whether you’re already a veteran of Austropop, or a new fan of the Tanzschein dance!

Happy Europe Day! 🎉

To mark the occasion, we were delighted to hold a stand at the EU Delegation’s “Visit Europe in One Day” celebration this week. Over 500 visitors explored an interactive showcase of cultures, languages, tourism and traditions from across the EU.

We spoke with guests about what makes Austria unique, such as our cuisine, and Embassy chef Franz kindly provided some tasters! Visitors could play a quiz about Austria to win prizes, and learn more about our presence in the UK through institutions like the Embassy and consulate, the Austrian Cultural Forum , the Tourism Board and our Trade Delegation.

Europe Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate European values and achievements together, but it is also a call of action to protect the promise of diversity, freedom, and democracy that Europe offers!

The Mayor of Bangor, Northern Ireland, Gillian McCollum, kindly welcomed Deputy Head of Mission Katharina Rauscher to explore the joint history of the twin towns of Bangor and Bregenz in Austria 🇦🇹🇬🇧

Katharina was delighted to visit Bregenz House, the HQ of the local Coast Guard, and to chat to staff who remembered the visit of the Mayor of Bregenz in 1992! We are grateful to the Ards and North Down Borough Council for their time and hospitality, and we look forward to building upon this longstanding partnership 🤝

What is the secret behind “Manchesterism”? 🤔

Accompanied by Ambassador Bernhard Wrabetz and Austrian Trade Commissioner Michael Müller, a delegation from Upper Austria’s regional government, OÖ Nachrichten and Volksbank Oberösterreich went to find out 🇦🇹🇬🇧

Honoured to be welcomed by Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, they learned about how the city became the modern metropole it is today. The delegation also met Honorary Consul Harald Löffler, who noted the similarities between Manchester and Linz, two industrial cities undergoing change. Mr. Burnham even pointed out how England could learn from Austria’s progressive housing policies!

We thank everyone involved who made this visit a 🇦🇹🇬🇧 success!
