Great to spend time over the weekend speaking with some of our hard-working local businesses on Sundridge Parade and hearing more about the opportunities and challenges facing our community. I also spoke with residents nearby on Plaistow Grove and picked up a few local issues to follow up on.

📱 MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS SUPPORT BY TEXT 📱

From today, people across Havering can text 07860 009642 to reach NHS 111’s mental health crisis support service.

This is for anyone who needs urgent mental health support but would rather text than call.

💬 A member of the NHS 111, Option 2 team will respond as soon as they can.

They will be able to provide psychological support and help signpost people to services that can offer further mental health support.

For some people, words can be difficult to say out loud, or they may not want to be overheard making a confidential phone call. This new text service gives people another way to ask for help when they need it.

Cllr Alessandro Georgiou has been elected as the Leader of Enfield Council, following the statutory Annual Council Meeting at the Civic Centre on 27 May.

Cllr Michael Rye OBE was appointed as the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration along with other Cabinet Members.

RISING BUSINESS RATES ARE HAMMERING LOCAL RETAILERS —

I met with the Chair of the Shopkeepers Campaign, Vivienne King, (in the picture) and the team that runs Nugent Shopping Park to discuss the impact of rising business rates.

Nugent is a hugely successful retail destination — it attracts around 4 million visits every year, bringing jobs and investment into our area.

But retail bosses are telling me that increasing costs, including business rates, are forcing them to rethink recruitment and expansion plans.

With unemployment continuously rising over the past two years, and vacancies falling, the government must stop and listen.

I will keep making the case on behalf of local retailers.
