Under the last Labour administration, we brought forward a motion on tackling the damage gambling is doing to our residents – and joined London Labour councils pushing for change nationally.

Now it’s happening – with new powers to stop betting shops and 24-hour gaming centres flooding our high streets.

The M&S store in Lewisham Shopping Centre is closing down today. It is a loss for our residents, who regularly use it to buy clothes, groceries, or for its convenient café. It’s also a loss for our central high street — and exemplifies the borough-wide issue of empty shop fronts in prime locations that the previous Labour administration fought so hard to tackle. We will continue to do so. Hopefully a new business that similarly meets residents’ needs will occupy this space soon.

Last night at Full Council, the Green Party voted against continued funding for Labour’s dedicated teams tackling anti-social behaviour – a proven approach to keeping our streets safe.

Time and again on the doorstep, Lewisham residents tell us the same thing: they want action on anti-social behaviour so they can feel more safe on our streets, parks and town centres.

Lewisham residents deserve to be safe, and to feel safe. We’ll keep making that case to the Green administration.

It was inspiring to hear such fantastic speeches, on a range of important topics, from so many passionate young people — the future is safe in their hands.

We introduced Integrated Enforcement to keep Lewisham’s streets safe. Now we’re putting a motion to July Council asking the Greens to carry it on.

Fund the officers who tackle ASB. Keep patrols where they’re needed most. Work with police and residents on local action plans.
