As Remembrance approaches, we pause to give thanks for those who sacrificed so much in the service of others. Their courage and selflessness remind us of the words of Jesus: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
These lyrics, written by Commissioner Robert Street, offer an opportunity to reflect on sacrifice, gratitude and our hope in God’s peace. Set to the familiar tune 'Aurelia' (T.B. 213) or any suitable 7.6.7.6.D metre tune, we pray they will help congregations and communities mark this important season of remembrance and commitment.
1 Lord, help us to remember
Our gift of life is free,
Each way ahead unfolding
With possibility.
Days full of love and laughter,
Of challenge, pain or care,
Help us to help each other,
Together as we share.
2 Lord, help us to remember
The lives that were cut short
Because of wars and hatred
And battles fiercely fought;
The maimed, the scarred, the grieving,
The hopes left torn apart;
Come with your grace and healing
To every broken heart.
3 Lord, help us to remember
The life you freely gave,
Nailed to the cross at Calvary
Our thankless souls to save.
And help us to remember
What it cost you to give,
Then fill us with your goodness
For every day we live.
