♻️ Recycling is good, but reducing it is even better πŸ’š This zero waste week do small changes, create less waste

Although recycling helps turn waste into new materials and cuts emissions. Instead, the best way to protect our environment is to create less waste in the first place 🌍

Did you know that many everyday items can be reused, repaired or recycled? We can all do this instead of throwing them away.

You can help to cut waste by:
πŸ”ƒ choose reusable bags, bottles and containers
πŸ«™ refill instead of rebuying
🍎 plan meals to help cut food waste
πŸ”§ repair items before replacing them
πŸ“¦ choose products with less or no packaging

Small changes can make a big difference. We can all work together to reduce waste ♻️

πŸ‘• Give clothes a second life this Second Hand September

Did you know that 4 in 10 people in the UK have worn an item of clothing just once? Also each person throws away 35 items of clothing every year. Choosing second-hand clothes is a simple way to cut waste and help clothes stay in use for longer.

This Second Hand September, why not try:
βœ… buying second-hand clothes instead of new ones
βœ… donating clothes you no longer wear
βœ… swapping clothes with friends and family
βœ… repairing clothing items instead of throwing them away. Get advice and support from Ealing Repair Cafe.

Making clothes uses large amounts of water, energy and raw materials. When you choose pre-loved items, you help cut waste and reduce the demand for new products. For more information on clothes and what to do with them, see https://www.ealing.gov.uk/info/201171/recycling_services/3622/clothing_and_household_textiles_reuse_and_recycling

Small changes can make a big difference. By giving unwanted clothes a new home, you can save money, reduce waste and help protect the planet.

♻️ Got a fridge or freezer to recycle?
This summer's heat waves have led to more fridges and freezers breaking down. As a result, recycling facilities across the UK are under pressure.

To help manage this Ealing Council has introduced a limit of one fridge or freezer per household for collections and drop-offs. This change is because these specialist recycling facilities are operating at full capacity. If you are replacing your appliance, check the supplier if they will collect the old appliance as many offer this service.

This applies to:
♻️ bulky waste collections
♻️ Greenford Road re-use and recycling centre

You must book an appointment before bringing a fridge or freezer to the Greenford Road re-use and recycling centre.

πŸ‘ Celebrating our design winners

The winning students from University of West London, Gabija, Souad and Andrada, not only met the competition brief, they also worked incredibly hard to paint all 42m of what was once a grey concrete wall.

With the help of the volunteers they recruited, they have created a stunning mural that brings colour and creativity to this part of the borough. πŸŽ¨πŸ…

Their artwork shares important messages about sustainability, reuse and repair, while brightening up the space for everyone to enjoy.

ReActon is open on Mondays from 11 am to 2 pm and Fridays from from 12 noon to 3 pm. Pop along to admire the mural and discover the inspiring reuse and repair activities taking place on site, such as free school uniform, household paint and books. Full details at https://actforealing.org/reacton-hub/

Congratulations to Gabija, Souad and Andrada on this fantastic achievement. πŸ‘

♻️ Did you know you can recycle batteries while you shop?

Many supermarkets and shops across the borough have battery recycling points. This makes it easy for you to recycle your used batteries safely. πŸ’š

You can find your nearest battery recycling point on the Recycle Your Electricals website. https://recycleyourelectricals.org.uk/

Why recycle batteries?
⚠️ Batteries can cause fires if they are put in household bins
🌍 Recycling helps save valuable materials that can be used again
♻️ It stops harmful chemicals from getting into the environment

Next time you go shopping, take your old batteries with you and recycle them. βœ”οΈ

πŸ₯šβ™»οΈ Egg cartons can be recycled
Most cardboard egg cartons can go in your household recycling. They are made from paper fibres that can be recycled into new products. Better still, many egg cartons are made from recycled paper and card.

πŸ₯š What about eggshells?
Put them in your food waste recycling. They can be turned into compost and renewable energy.

Recycling egg cartons helps save resources and cut waste. You can also reuse them at home for crafts, planting seeds or storage before recycling them.

Before you recycle an egg carton, make sure it is empty and clean.

Small changes can make a big difference. By recycling everyday items such as egg cartons and eggshells, you can help cut waste and support a circular economy.

♻️ Reuse. Repair. Refill. Repeat.
