In the full flow of conference season, it feels like a perfect time to highlight one of our most beloved Liberal leaders of modern times. Sitting pride of place above the fireplace in the Smoking Room, you can find a picture of Jeremy John Durham Ashdown, otherwise universally known as Paddy Ashdown.
Paddy Ashdown (1941–2018), formally The Right Honourable the Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon, GCMG, KBE, PC, was a British politician, diplomat and former Royal Marines officer who led the Liberal Democrats from 1988 to 1999. After serving in the Royal Marines, including with the Special Boat Service, and later working for the Foreign Office, he entered Parliament as MP for Yeovil in 1983. As Liberal Democrat leader, he oversaw a significant revival in the party’s electoral fortunes, culminating in the 1997 general election, when the party won 46 seats. He subsequently became one of Britain’s most prominent voices on the Balkans, having strongly advocated international intervention during the Bosnian War. From 2002 to 2006, he served as the international community’s High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative, overseeing aspects of the country’s post-war reconstruction and peace process.
After leaving the House of Commons in 2001, he became a life peer as Baron Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon, entering the House of Lords as Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon. He sat in the Lords until his death in 2018, contributing to debates on foreign affairs, defence and international development.
Paddy was a highly respected politician across all parties and meant a huge amount to the Liberal Democrats and beyond. This may be why his name was chosen for our recently created meeting room, the Ashdown Room.
