We’re looking for passionate individuals to join our governance committees, including both CIEH members and non-members.

Governance volunteering isn’t about ticking boxes — it’s about working together to shape the future of Environmental Health. You’ll be part of a supportive team, helping us stay true to our mission of creating safer, cleaner, and healthier environments for the benefit of all.

🚨 FoodArt UK Limited fined more than £18,000 for serious food hygiene breaches.

A company that stored food and drinks in a warehouse contaminated by cat faeces, urine and associated bacteria has been fined more than £18,000 following a successful prosecution by Enfield Council.

FoodArt UK Limited, based in Lockfield Avenue, Brimsdown, pleading guilty to four food hygiene offences at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court.

Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) discovered significant quantities of cat faeces, urine and associated bacteria in a warehouse where food and drink products were being stored during inspections in January and February 2025.

Contamination was found in aisles containing child-appealing drinks and on packaging that consumers could handle and drink from directly, including open crates of bottled water.

Officers also found drinks bottles had fallen into contaminated areas, increasing the risk of food contamination. Due to the imminent risk to public health, the business voluntarily closed on two occasions to allow cleaning, disinfection and staff training to take place.

Cllr Elisa Morreale, Cabinet Member for Licensing at Enfield Council, said: “Our environmental health officers discovered a significant danger to public health, when they visited the company’s warehouse in Brimsdown which is not acceptable.

“We took immediate action and temporarily closed the premises down, for the owners to deep clean the areas identified to protect human health and help keep our residents safe.

"The fine imposed by the judge in court justifies the seriousness of this case.

“Business operators in Enfield are reminded of their responsibilities to ensure pest control measures are in place, and to regularly clean and maintain their premises.

“We won’t hesitate to take robust action against any business in the borough who breaks the law and puts our resident’s health at risk.”

This case shows how quickly poor hygiene and inadequate staff training can lead to the prosecution of a food business.

Recent reports of an ongoing Salmonella outbreak potentially linked to imported eggs have prompted CIEH and the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) to call on food businesses to review their egg sourcing practices.

The outbreak, currently under investigation by the UK Health Security Agency, has reportedly resulted in hundreds of cases of Salmonella food poisoning and one death.

Investigations by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) so far have identified potential links to eggs imported from outside the UK used by some restaurants, cafés and other food service businesses.

To support the investigation, Environmental Health professionals working in local authorities have been asked by UKHSA to collect samples during inspections to help identify the prevalence of the eggs within the supply chain.

CIEH and BEIC are encouraging businesses to choose British Lion eggs, which are produced under the stringent requirements of the British Lion Code of Practice and are recommended by the FSA as safe to eat runny or raw.

The organisations say the incident highlights the importance of knowing the provenance of food products and ensuring safety remains a priority, even as businesses face ongoing cost pressures. They are also reminding consumers to look for the British Lion mark and ask hospitality venues whether British Lion eggs are being used.

After years working as a head chef, Sabela realised that one of the parts of the job she enjoyed most was getting food safety and compliance right.

That interest led her to study environmental health at Liverpool John Moores University, turning a passion for food safety into the next step in her career.

Reflecting on her experience, Sabela said:

"After years as a head chef, I realised one of my favourite parts of the job was actually getting the food safety and compliance side just right. It turned out I loved that just as much as the cooking itself! Environmental health felt like a natural next chapter, a chance to take that passion and build a whole career around compliance and health and safety."

One of the things Sabela has enjoyed most about her studies is discovering just how broad environmental health is, and understanding the reasoning behind the rules that help protect public health.

Her advice for anyone considering an environmental health degree?

"Go in with an open mind, embrace all the variety that comes your way, and enjoy the journey."

🦟 As temperatures rise and climate change continues to reshape our environment, the UK faces an increasing risk from invasive mosquito species and the diseases they can carry.

Today, on World Mosquito Day, we're highlighting the vital work being carried out to monitor and manage this growing public health challenge.

Last year, we spoke to Stephen Petri, Port Health Officer at Ashford Port Health, who shared how teams at Sevington Inland Border Facility are helping detect and prevent the introduction of mosquitoes arriving via international freight and transport routes.

The work combines surveillance, monitoring and rapid response measures to reduce risks and protect public health in the face of changing environmental conditions.

As Stephen explained: "With our scale, climate change and the volume of traffic coming through, it's really a question of when, not if, and that is why we are so conscientious and exacting in our role."
