India participated in the 22nd Session of the IMO Intersessional Working Group on Greenhouse Gas Emissions (ISWG-GHG 22), held from 1–4 September 2026, contributing to key deliberations on the implementation of the IMO Net-Zero Framework.

The Indian delegation was led by Shri Satish Devdas Kamath, Principal Officer, MMD Kandla, and included Shri C.P.K. Kashyap and Shri Mudit Mehrotra, representing India’s maritime interests in the discussions.

India’s key interventions emphasised:

🔹 A preparatory phase to assess the readiness and practical feasibility of alternative fuels;

🔹 An experience-building phase before the introduction of major measures, enabling informed and effective implementation; and

🔹 Future economic measures to be evidence-based, practical and equitable, while taking into account the diverse circumstances of Member States.

The session reflected broad support for the objectives of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy. India’s balanced and pragmatic approach, particularly its call for preparatory and experience-building phases, was well received and garnered encouraging support from several Member States.

India remains committed to actively contributing towards a practical, inclusive and equitable pathway for the decarbonisation of international shipping.
