Living Streets We are Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking. We believe that a walking nation means progress for everyone.

We want to create a walking nation, free from congested roads and pollution, reducing the risk of preventable illness and social isolation and making walking the natural choice. Our ambition is to get people of all generations to enjoy the benefits that this simple act brings and to ensure all our streets are fit for walking. For more than 85 years we’ve been a beacon for walking. In our early days our campaigning led to the UK’s first zebra crossings and speed limits. Now, our campaigns and local projects deliver real change to overcome barriers to walking and our ground breaking initiatives such as the world’s biggest Walk to School campaign encourage millions of people to walk. Progress starts here: one street, one school, one step at a time.

🍂👟 It's International Walk To School Month and we're celebrating the voices of young people taking part in our Next Steps programme at Fitzalan High School in Cardiff.

Earlier this month, Living Streets' Head of Campaigns and Public Affairs, Ruth Billingham, and School Coordinator for Wales, Laura Service visited the school to hear directly from Year 7 pupils about their journeys to school. Pupils shared what it's like to take part in Next Steps, why walking matters to them, and what changes could make their local streets safer and more welcoming for everyone.

We were also delighted to be joined by Councillor Kanaya Singh and staff from the school, who spoke about the importance of listening to young people's experiences and supporting active travel.

The visit came just before pupils completed the Walking Challenge, helping even more young people discover the benefits of walking for their health, wellbeing and independence.

👏 Thank you to the pupils, staff and partners who helped make the day such a success.

We're pleased to welcome four new trustees to the Living Streets Board.

Rezina Chowdhury, Daisy Narayanan MBE, Dr Catherine Purcell and Professor Ian Walker bring a wealth of experience from public health, research, placemaking, communications and active travel. Together, they'll help support and guide our work to create streets where everyone can walk, wheel and connect safely.

We're excited to work with them as we continue campaigning for healthier, fairer and more welcoming communities across the UK.

We had a great time at our walk to school event with Deputy Minister for Transport Mark Hooper MS and pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Parc Jenner Park Primary School in Barry yesterday morning.

The school takes part in WOW – the walk to school challenge from Living Streets, which sees pupils record how they get to school using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker with those who walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ to school being awarded a monthly WOW badge.

In Wales, over 200 primary schools are benefiting from WOW, thanks to funding from Welsh Government Living Streets works with over 2,000 schools across the UK to deliver its walk to school programme. The project highlights the positive impact active travel investment has on local communities.
