Aiming to increase young people's independence, abilities and freedom to thrive, all while reducing unemployment, mental health issues, crime rates and homelessness. OUR AIM
Empowering, Equipping, Inspiring, Training, Mentoring, Motivating and Educating young people aged 5 to 30 years old through Employability, Wellbeing and Enrichment Support. Reducing homelessness

🌺 SAPPHIRE MALAWI | EMPOWERING FARMERS THROUGH HIBISCUS PRODUCTION TRAINING 🌱🇲🇼

Growing Opportunities, Strengthening Livelihoods!

Sapphire Community Organization – Malawi continues to empower farmers through sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient livelihood initiatives under the Green Hands Project. 🌿

Ahead of the 2026/2027 growing season, Sapphire Malawi Team Leader, Lonely Mwale, successfully trained 23 farmers from Khwisa and Mangerengere Clubs in hibiscus production in Traditional Authority Nsamala, Balaka District, Malawi.

🌱 What did the training cover?
✅ The importance and benefits of hibiscus farming
✅ Land preparation and planting techniques
✅ Appropriate planting methods and spacing
✅ Field management and crop maintenance
✅ Pest and disease control
✅ Harvesting and post-harvest handling
✅ Opportunities for income generation and agricultural diversification

The training equipped farmers with practical knowledge and skills to establish and manage their hibiscus crops effectively, with the potential to improve productivity, increase household incomes, and strengthen rural livelihoods.

By promoting climate-smart agriculture and alternative income-generating opportunities, Sapphire Malawi is helping communities build resilience to climate-related challenges while creating pathways towards greater economic independence.

🌺 SAPPHIRE INTERNATIONAL MALAWI | COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS MEETING 🌱

Last week , Sapphire International Malawi held a productive meeting with community champions in Mangochi, T/A Nankumba, to prepare for the upcoming community event.

The meeting brought together 10 community champion leaders, who worked collaboratively to draft a plan for the hibiscus production workshops scheduled to take place during October 2026.

🌍 SAPPHIRE INTERNATIONAL KENYA | WOMEN’S BUSINESS ACCELERATION PROJECT 💜

💡 Redefining Poverty. Empowering Women. Building Stronger Futures.

As part of our Women’s Business Acceleration Project, Sapphire International Kenya facilitated group discussions focused on redefining poverty beyond income.

The discussions explored how poverty manifests at the household level and the underlying systemic barriers that can contribute to its persistence, including:

🔹 Dependency – building self-reliance and independence.
🔹 Limited financial literacy – strengthening financial knowledge and money management skills.
🔹 Gender inequality – addressing barriers that limit women’s opportunities.
🔹 Limited decision-making power – empowering women to have a stronger voice in household and business decisions.

By helping women understand these challenges, we aim to support them in identifying practical solutions, strengthening their economic independence and building more sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.

Meet Kelvin Otieno Opondo – Sapphire Kenya Manager

This Black History Month, we are proud to shine a spotlight on Kelvin Otieno Opondo, Sapphire Kenya Manager, community development practitioner and social impact leader.

Kelvin works to strengthen women, families and communities through practical economic empowerment.

Through his work with Sapphire, he has helped develop the New Village movement, focused on building women’s economic systems at household level. What began with a small group of women has grown into a network of four women’s groups representing approximately 60 households.

The work goes beyond traditional financial assistance, supporting women to develop:

🤝 Revolving funds
🌱 Sustainable household support systems

📢 We're recruiting a Volunteer Treasurer!

Thurrock CVS is looking for a finance-minded volunteer to join our Board of Trustees and help keep our finances healthy, transparent and well governed.

Working alongside our CEO and management accountant, you'll:
✅ Provide strategic financial oversight and assurance to the Board
✅ Lead our finance, audit and risk committee
✅ Help guide key financial decisions for a charity that has supported our community for 30+ years

What we're looking for:
✅ A finance or accountancy background (essential)
✅ Experience overseeing accounts and financial reporting
✅ Strong attention to detail and the confidence to constructively challenge
✅ Clear communication so you can explain finances to non-financial trustees
✅ A professional qualification is desirable. Charity sector experience is beneficial, but not essential.

You will be expected to attend quarterly Board meetings (Monday afternoons, 3:30-6:00pm) plus an AGM each November. Meetings are in person, while day-to-day oversight can largely be done from home.

Expenses will be reimbursed, ongoing support offered and a full induction provided.
