🌱 “This estate is like a small village, and we’re developing more villagey mindsets.”

For almost 30 years, James has called Loraine Estate home. Through his passion for gardening and community action, he’s helped transform shared spaces and bring neighbours together.

As part of our resident-led community budgeting project, people living on Loraine Estate have been given the power to decide how £70,000 is spent to improve health, wellbeing and everyday life in their community. From new vegetable planters and gardening projects to activities that help residents connect like British Sign Language classes, the impact is already being felt across the estate.

James says the process has created a stronger sense of community, with more people getting involved, volunteering and taking pride in where they live. The estate's biggest-ever summer party brought together residents from every block, showing what can happen when local people have a real say in shaping their neighbourhood.

Loraine Estate is home to people from many different backgrounds, and that diversity is one of its strengths. As James puts it: “Everyone is a minority here, so nobody is – we’re all in it together.”

Tomorrow you can read James’s full story on the Islington Life website. 💚

🏡 From Monday 23 November private renters across Islington will benefit from stronger protections and better housing standards.

Selective licensing helps tenants by ensuring privately rented homes are safe, well managed and properly maintained. Landlords must meet clear standards on property safety, repairs, security, waste management and tenant information, giving residents greater protection, transparency and peace of mind.

The council's selective licensing scheme, which currently applies to Finsbury Park, Hillrise, and Tollington wards, will be extended to seven more wards: Barnsbury, Caledonian, Tufnell Park, Mildmay, Highbury, Junction and Laycock.

It will come into effect on Monday 23 November.

In Islington and Haringey this Recovery Month, we're remembering those we've lost to overdose, training people to save lives, and celebrating healing. 💚

At Streets Fest last week, organised with grassroots homelessness organisation , we spoke to services and attendees of the festival about the support available, and the importance of raising awareness about Naloxone - a life-saving drug anyone can carry and learn to administer, to save the lives of those experiencing opioid overdose.

Throughout the month, Better Lives, The Grove, and other local drug and alcohol support services are organising walks, support groups, and painting commemorative art to recognise this important moment in the calendar.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with substance use, you never have to face it alone. Visit our website to find out how to access professional, compassionate support.

Visit the Change Grow Live website to learn more about Naloxone, how to use it, and acquire a free kit.

Ahead of Arsenal's match against Chelsea today, we're celebrating Walt Utz, a gay foster carer in Islington - through fostering, he gained a love of football, and Arsenal FC. 🌈

One of his foster children, a lifelong fan, encouraged him to join the , the UK's first and largest LGBTQ+ football fan group - and there he found friends, community, and a love for the beautiful game. ⚽ We spoke to him about what Arsenal's victory last season meant to him.

For the start of the new season, we wanted to share this incredible story about how football can bring people together, and kick out homophobia.

You can read more about Walt's story at the Islington Life website, and see his amazing baking business at .cupcake.bouquets

Good luck today gooners!
