The Institute of Directors was founded in 1903 and within three years we were awarded a Royal Charter to support, represent and set standards for business leaders nationwide. Chartered Director eligibility is changing 📣

As the Institute of Directors’ gold standard for governance, professionalism and board-level competence, Chartered Director recognises the experience and expertise needed to lead effectively at the highest level.

As a result, we’re updating our eligibility criteria and supporting guidance – with the aim of making the pathway clearer, more accessible and better aligned with modern governance practices.

What’s changing?

💰 The £250k annual turnover requirement will be removed.
✔️ Eligibility criteria will be clearer, including expectations around recent and consecutive governance experience.
🏆 Senior leadership roles with substantive governance responsibilities will receive broader recognition.
💼 Experience of working closely with boards will also be recognised.
🎓 Eligibility will remain aligned with the IoD Director Competency Framework and assessment standards.

These updates will give applicants greater clarity, support consistent assessment and help more experienced leaders take the next step towards Chartered Director status.

Celebrating the next generation of exceptional directors. 🎓

On Monday, more than 200 directors, graduates and guests gathered at 116 Pall Mall to celebrate a significant professional milestone: achieving their IoD Certificate, Diploma or Chartered Director qualification.

The annual graduation ceremonies recognised the dedication, perseverance and commitment shown by each graduate throughout their professional development journey. Surrounded by family, friends and peers, graduates marked their achievements and the positive impact they continue to make in boardrooms and organisations across the UK. 🌟

We were also delighted to welcome IoD Director General, Jon Geldart, to congratulate graduates, alongside an inspiring keynote address from Baroness Lawrence – a life peer and one of the UK’s most prominent voices on justice, equality and institutional accountability – whose reflections on leadership, resilience and creating meaningful change resonated with the audience.

These achievements represent more than qualifications. They reflect a commitment to strong governance, responsible leadership and continuous learning.
