Could you spend three months practising law abroad next summer?

Applications are open for the 2027 Pegasus Scholarships, supported by all four Inns of Court. The scheme offers barristers within their first seven years of practice the chance to work with a host law firm in another common law jurisdiction or the EU.

🎓 Named in honour of a leading figure in arbitration 🎓

The Michael Mustill Scholarships commemorate the life and work of Michael Mustill and are delivered in partnership with the International Dispute Resolution Centre (IDRC).

They support Members of the Inn developing skills and experience in ADR ahead of a career at the Bar.

Earlier this year we spotted that something was up with our portrait of Lady Hale, painted by artist David Cobley, which hangs in Hall. The paper by the pen pot had acquired some marks. We have taken the portrait off display whilst we carry out further investigations...

In its place we have temporarily hung our 1926 portrait of Lord Merrivale who was President of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division. He earns his place in Hall alongside other distinguished Members, including Lord Birkenhead, Lord Bingham and Lady Rose.

Painted by distinguished artist William Orpen, in 2025 the portrait was cleaned and glazed by specialist conservators. The portrait is also 100 years old this year, so we’re thrilled to be able to show it off in Hall in its centenary year!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for University Advocacy Day on Saturday 10 October🎓⚖️

It was fantastic to welcome prospective students considering a career at the Bar for a day of insight, practice, and connection. Throughout the day, attendees:

✅ Heard directly from leading barristers on what makes an effective advocate
✅ Put their own advocacy skills to the test, with live feedback from the profession
✅ Networked with like-minded students and Inn members across all levels of seniority

A huge thank you to our barrister volunteers who gave their time and expertise, and to everyone who came along and threw themselves into the day.

❓ Applying for a Bar Course Scholarship? Here are three things to keep in mind:

📚 Know the assessment criteria
Candidates are assessed against five criteria: Academic Ability, Advocacy, Analytical Skills, Working with Others, and Motivation.

✍️ Take your time with your application
Rushed applications are a common mistake. Think about how your application will come across at shortlisting and interview, and choose referees who know you well and can speak to the criteria.

💼 Non-legal experience counts
Your examples don’t have to come from legal experience. If a non-legal example is relevant to the question and demonstrates the criteria, use it to strengthen your application.

Last night, a new portrait of our historic Member, Edith Hesling, was unveiled at the Inn.

Edith Hesling was first woman to be Called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 1923. She was also the first woman to be elected to the Northern Circuit, practising from Chambers in Manchester, the first to preside over a County Court and the first woman barrister to have a daughter Called to the Bar.

The portrait, painted by artist Keith Breeden, was unveiled by the Treasurer alongside Hesling's great-granddaughter, Deborah Airey, who is also a barrister Member of Gray’s Inn.

We were delighted to also welcome a number of pioneering women from our membership to the unveiling, including Benchers Lady Brenda Hale, HHJ Anuja Dhir and Honorary Bencher Dana Denis-Smith OBE.
