It stems from the same root as Eureka – ‘I found it!’ Heuristic play gives children an opportunity to experiment spontaneously with a wide range of non-commercial objects. Whilst the heuristic play session is in process, adults need to remain seated and as quiet as possible. This supports children in making their own choices and discoveries.’ Montessori Theory • Montessori saw that children held within them something wonderful, something so special that it could be the key to changing the world. She saw that they were inherently good and that, if allowed to develop freely, they felt connected to everything and were naturally caring to each other and the world around them. The more that she worked with the children, the more convinced she was that they had precise inner guides and that the work of adults was to help them to be all that they could be. She felt that it was the spiritual nature of children that had been forgotten and denied and that children could therefore show adults the way to return to a more meaningful, holistic way of living. Some of the elements of the Montessori theory includes suggestions such as Children thrive on order, are natural learners, need freedom and enjoy being busily involved in processes and are LITTLE TEACHERS Our playgroup aims to: • Provide a safe, happy and stimulating environment to promote the healthy development of children; • Offer all children between the ages of 0 and five, and their parents, a service which promotes equality and values diversity. We encourage the children to learn the qualities of caring and sharing, and to value and respect the beliefs, opinions and feelings of others; • Enable children to play and learn with other children and adults, and to help them to separate from their parents or carers as easily as possible; • Allow children opportunities to express themselves in different ways and to acquire new skills and experiences in a warm, caring environment; • Work in partnership with parents to help the children to learn and develop; • Work within the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda, following the Early Years Foundation Stage setting the standards for ‘Learning Development and Care for Children from Birth to Five’.
