Spencer House, London

Spencer House, London London’s most magnificent 18th century private palace, built in 1756-66 for the first Earl Spencer, an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales. Adults: £12.00.

From its conception, Spencer House was recognized as one of the most ambitious aristocratic private palaces ever built in London and is today the city’s only great eighteenth-century private palace to survive intact. The house was built in (1756-66) for John, 1st Earl Spencer an ancestor of Diana, princess of Wales (1961-97). Designed by John Vardy and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart, the house is one of

the pioneer examples of neo-classical architecture and marks a turning point in English architectural history from Palladianism to neo-classical. Spencer House has regained the full splendor of its late-eighteenth century appearance, after a painstaking ten-year restoration undertaken by RIT Capital Partners Plc. Eight state rooms are open to the public for viewing on Sundays, and are available for private and corporate entertaining during the rest of the week. These Magnificently restored rooms were amongst the first neo-classical interiors in Europe. Vardy’s Palm Room, with its spectacular screen of gilded palm trees and arched fronds, is a unique Palladian set piece, while the elegant mural decorations of Stuart’s Painted Room reflect the eighteenth-century passion for classical Greece and Rome. Every Sunday (expect during August)

10:30am to 5:45pm (last tour 4.45pm). Concessions: £10.00

If there’s one room that has the power to take your breath away at it’s The Painted Room. The last stop on tours of The State Rooms, The Painted Room is justly famous as one of the earliest complete neoclassical interiors in Europe, decorated with exquisite wall paintings inspired by contemporary excavations of the Roman ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum. 🖼️

In our behind the scenes look into the excellent teams that make Spencer House so unique, we join Vicky, our savvy collections manager, who takes us through her day-to-day activities while on duty in our demi palace. In her own words…

“My job is to care for the historic interiors and the artworks and objects we have on display. It’s a varied job and very different from working in a museum because we are a busy events venue, as well as a visitor attraction. So, a huge part of the job involves the physical care of the house and collection - that’s everything from day to day cleaning to the conservation of individual objects right up to large-scale redecoration and maintenance projects involving entire rooms.

I bring in a wide range of specialist contractors to carry out this work and August is my busiest time when the house closes for events and tours, and I have just four weeks to get all those big, disruptive jobs done. Year round I have to keep on top of wear and tear and do regular condition checks of all the objects to spot any changes or issues before they become serious.”
