As Ambassador Kumin Ferenc’s diplomatic mission in the United Kingdom draws to a close, it was especially meaningful to visit the newly refurbished Marlow Bridge—a place that has accompanied his journey from the very beginning.

During his first month as Ambassador, Marlow was among the first places he visited. Since then, he has returned many times, often cycling across the bridge in his spare time. Coming back now, following its remarkable refurbishment, provided a fitting and personal way to bring this chapter of his work to a close.

Marlow Bridge holds a unique place in the shared heritage of Hungary and the United Kingdom. It remains the only surviving original bridge designed by William Tierney Clark, following the destruction of Budapest’s Széchenyi Chain Bridge during the Second World War. Although the Chain Bridge was faithfully rebuilt after the war, Marlow Bridge is the sole surviving original example of Sir William Tierney Clark’s work, standing as a lasting historical and engineering link between our two nations—a connection that continues to be celebrated on both sides.

The event was an opportunity to reflect on the many meaningful relationships, shared achievements, and lasting friendships that have been built over the years. We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us to mark this special occasion and celebrate the close ties that have made this posting so memorable.
