FREE online Recycling webinars:
Recycling week 14-18 September 2026. REGISTER now!

Western Riverside Waste Authority Education Team is here to take the confusion out of recycling.
We are inviting all local residents to free, 45-minute webinar focused purely on what can and cannot go into your home recycling bin.

It’s about giving you the straightforward, practical answers you need to recycle correctly and confidently at home.
PLEASE note – this information is specific to our boroughs of Wandsworth Council, Lambeth Council, Hammersmith & Fulham Council, and Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London.

During this session, we will cover:

- A clear, item-by-item guide to the materials accepted in your local recycling bin (paper, card, plastics, glass, and metal).
- The most common “contaminants” that catch residents out – and exactly where to put them instead.
- Specific rules: Which plastics are accepted? Should you crush items or leave them whole? Do labels need to be removed?
- A dedicated live Q&A session at the end where you can ask our team about those tricky items you’re never sure about.

If you are part of a resident or tenants’ group, we welcome you to join as a community – and feel free to share this invitation with your neighbours.

We will run in on Microsoft Teams, you will not need to download anything, as you can use your browser.

Coffee drinker?
You can now bring your used coffee pods for recycling at Smugglers Way Household Waste and Recycling Centre!

Western Riverside Waste Authority have partnered with Podback to provide recycling for your used coffee, tea and hot chocolate pods.

When visiting us, you will find the Podback station located in Bay A. Please separate out you plastic and aluminium pods and place them loose in to the appropriate bin.

What happens to your used coffee pods (or tea/hot chocolate pods)?

Pods are taken to East Yorkshire where the coffee is removed. Coffee Grounds are then taken to a food waste recycling plant in South Yorkshire. This is then processed and goes on to become renewable energy and biofertiliser.

Plastic pods are kept in East Yorkshire where they are recycled to make new items like building materials and packaging. Aluminium pods are taken to South Wales where they are used to make drinks cans and car components.

Seven schools across our four boroughs took part in our pilot food waste outreach programme ‘Planet to Plate’. The aims of the programme were to empower schools and pupils to reduce food waste.

The programme’s aims were to;

Help schools understand where savings could be made through conducting pupil led food waste audits and surveys.

Provide educational sessions for pupils on the social and environmental consequences of food waste and how we can tackle it.

Encourage the school to correctly use food waste recycling infrastructure.

The children across the schools made pledges to reduce food waste, tasted smoothies made using bruised fruit, invented recipes using older or wonky fruit and vegetables, made campaign posters and planted microgreen seeds in reused juice cartons.
