Weāre only just taking it in.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has, only a few minutes ago, announced a National Commission for Electoral Reform and a manifesto commitment to change our electoral system in the next Parliament.
Burnham closed out our āChange:HOW?ā conference 16 months ago with a speech outlining the wholesale reform Britain needs - electoral reform, the public ownership of essentials, a national housebuilding programme.
We backed him to do this.
We built the possibility that one day he could give that speech as a Prime Minister.
16 months on, we are utterly vindicated in that decision.
Here, the public gets what it has been crying out for. A Prime Minister no longer tinkering around the edges but committing to actual political, economic and social reform.
Electoral reform is the key that unlocks that transformation. It lets us change everything by believing in everyone.
Burnhamās speech today was a Compass speech: full of people, love, compassion, understanding, honesty.
And crucially, some of the big ideas that will change the country.
Like a National Care Service; a publicly owned GB Grid; the biggest council house building programme since the post-war era leasehold reform; global leadership and foreign policy driven by Labour values.
But today, on that stage, Burnham did more than announce a list of policies.
He announced the way we make our dreams come true; through a new politics, starting now at last with PR.
In the oldest Parliament on earth and fifth-largest national economy in the world, we have a Prime Minister who has openly called for the way power operates to change.
40 years of neoliberalism hasnāt ended today. But it could be the start of the end.
We helped get Andy to base camp and heās just announced his determination to climb that mountain. Itās up to us to help him make sure he does.
Weāve shown we can turn ideas into power and into action.
Get the right people in, connecting the movement, the leaders, the ideas, and setting the right direction.
Thereās so much more to be done. On water, we need to go further and push for true, democratic and public ownership. And there is still a need for decisive action on climate change.
Today we have taken a leap today towards a good society. Letās celebrate because a win like this is unprecedented.
